We like to think music sells on merit but really marketing plays a huge role too - so who do you think uses gimmicks and stunts the most to get attention and shift product?
Madonna -- biggest 2nd week drop in history due to bundling.
Also the Sex book, which was panned by critics as a try-hard stunt:
"The overwhelming effect of the book is numbing," complained Rolling Stone. "The images are derivative, and Madonna herself seems far too eager to shock; that, not even prurient arousal, seems the ideal response the book tirelessly seeks. The potency of Sex's subject matter is dissipated by Madonna and Meisel's self-congratulatory – and silly – sense of their own 'bravery,' as if their naughty games were somehow revolutionary."[56]
LOL as if 'Party in the USA', 'The Climb' and these other songs without gimmicks didn't do well Gaga fans have had something against Miley ever since she stole her attention at the VMAs lmfao
With that being said Gaga def needs a gimmick and stunts to sell

After Can't Be Tamed she needed some sort of gimmick to get back on top. I'm not saying its a bad thing, I'm saying she needed something like this to be relevant again.

Those were popular though because the Hannah Montanna empire and factory was still around and or propelling her further. Once she distanced herself (Can't Be Tamed) she needed the gimmick to be relevant. Twerking gave her a platform to be noticed and talked about. Would Wrecking Ball have been as big as it was without the video and the VMAs?
