I thought it was out in the US already because I've just been reading some reviews of it, it was probably a preview showing then.
On the whole it seems that as with most American-Chinese films (even though it's based on Japanese culture) the cinematogprahy, score, costumes etc were breathtaking but the story and characters were lacking. It also seems that the courtesan point of it was glamoured up and seen as something of superiority over other escorts and poor women, rather then an aesthetic cover for the fact that it's still prostitution, with better conversation (as the women were educated) but it was still an inferior role for women to men who could afford it and cheat on their wives with but not tell anybody about except their buddies who were probably there too. But then again, the book was written by an outsider pretending to be an insider and it was lacking as well, but the film apparantly even glosses over the fact that the geisha were intelligent and very calculated in the forced submissiveness and femininity etc. It's really a case of people liking women one way i.e. impeccable objects of lust but still look down on those who conform to that and they themselves compete with each other and look down on other women and men without money, not realising that they are objects of exploitation but thinking of it as empowerment.
I'll watch it when it comes out here but if I find it ridiculous I wont bother finishing it, I've done that too many times before. I like amazing cinematography when it's matched with substance. Thankfully there are and have been some really grand films with good stories lately, albeit most have been pure fantasy but it's better then nothing eh lol.
