Does Tom have some sort of poor relationship with his Dad? Why else would he need a father figure? I thought him and his Dad were close.
Anyway, I think everyone who supported Tom's coming out (and rightfully so) is thinking in the back of their minds that this is a mess. I mean, a guy twice his age with a sloppy sex tape? Come on Tom, you can do better.
