top 50 TRACKS
g o r g o n c i t y - "REAL" (feat. Yasmin)
In early 2012, I listened to Yasmin for the first time while researching for my New Sound of the UK rate, and I've loved her ever since. She released three great singles in 2011, and then kinda fell away from singing for a bit. She's been featured on a few singles this year, and "Real" is one of them. I don't know much about Gorgon City, but I definitely love their production on this track. There's definitely a bit of a '90's house feel in this track, which isn't surprising considering this style has been all over British dance music this year. The beat drop in the chorus is really big, and makes this song a lot of fun to bop to.
d u k e d u m o n t - "NEED U (100%)" (feat. A*M*E)
British dance music was inspired so much by the '90's this year, and one of the year's biggest hits, "Need U (100%)", is proof of that. Dance music from earlier in this decade was all about the techno and the party, but this new wave of old dance music has so much more soul, which makes me, the listener, feel more involved and connected. "Need U" is pretty simple in structure, with the same verse being repeated twice, and the chorus is just a simple humming melody. But this simplicity feels good. It's not trying too hard; it's just good, clean fun.
s t . v i n c e n t - "BIRTH IN REVERSE"
"Birth in Reverse", the lead single from St. Vincent's new album to be released in 2014, was a late addition to the 2013 music scene. However, the song is too good to be ignored, and it needed to be added to the Top 50. The song begins with the lyrics, "Oh what an ordinary day / Take out the garbage, masturbate." That's quite an introduction to the new era! The rest of the song contains a super-catchy chorus and a classic guitar jam session, which ends up being my favorite part of the song. This song gives us a lot to look forward to in the new year from Annie Clark.
j a m e s b l a k e - "VOYEUR"
James Blake became more of a presence in the mainstream music scene this year with his big Mercury Prize win and Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. I've always found his music a bit complex and a little hard to dig into. He's one of those artists, for me, who you have to really commit to in order to appreciate. His music isn't the easy-to-digest pop I so love. My favorite song from his newest release, Overgrown, is "Voyeur". The track begins with a repetition of "And her mind was on me", which has sparse production, followed by another repetition of "'Cause I am floored", which is an absolutely beautiful little piece of music. After two and half minutes, the song turns a bit techno and dirty (in a good way), which is unexpected and exciting. This song probably stuck with me the most because it is his most accessible.
f k a t w i g s - "HOW'S THAT"
The artist formerly known as twigs first got my attention with her EP2 release. I'm always on the lookout for young, new British females in music. "How's That" is the best song on the EP, and I love it because it sounds so minimalist and so expansive at the same time. The music just sounds so BIG and overwhelming, yet twigs' voice is small and delicate. "How's that... feel?" is really all I can remember every time I listen, but I get so lost in the music that I don't pay attention to words. This definitely feels like some "getting high" music.

top 50 TRACKS
s t a r c h i l d - "RELAX"
I really don't know much about Starchild at all. I just heard this song on Solange's compilation album and it was the one that stuck with me the most. It's a pretty short song (2:37), and it's sorta subtle, but I love the instrumental, which reminds me "Steal My Sunshine" in some parts. That throwback is enough for me to fall in love with the song.
m a j i c a l c l o u d z - "TURNS TURNS TURNS"
I first heard of Majical Cloudz due to Grimes' album last year. This dreamy little number, which may have been inspired by a '60's classic, was the song that I love the most from their album Impersonator. The instrumental reminds me a little of Prince, and the vocals are very haunting. The chorus is catchy and emotional, a good combination. I'd consider this another trippy, "getting high" song.
a u t r e n e v e u t - "PLAY BY PLAY"
This song is such a trip. The first two minutes reminds me of a drunken rant. The melodrama of the vocals captivates and confuses me. It isn't until two minutes in that the structure really starts to form with some interesting beats. That's also when the best hooks come in. The "go-o-o"'s are fun to sing along with. Then he delivers the title hook, "I just called you up to get that play-by-play, by-play / Don't ever leave me alone", which I can't help but belt out. Also, shout out to the woman who sings in the final minute! She really tops it all off.
q u a d r o n - "HEY LOVE"
I first heard of Quadron this year after I listened to Rhye, another duo that features the dude in this group. I LOVED Rhye's album, so I naturally had to give Avalanche a try. Quadron's album features a more soul-inspired pop sound that I didn't like as much. But I quite enjoyed "Hey Love", which is the best song on the album. I definitely love Coco O's voice, which has such an American R&B feel to it, even though she's Danish. Her voice has a shy quality, but you can tell that she loves to belt occasionally, as she hits the big notes in the final chorus.
b r a n d y c l a r k - "STRIPES"
Brandy Clark, the woman who has written songs for Reba, Miranda, Kacey, and The Band Perry, finally came out with an album of her own in 2013. 12 Stories features a classic storytelling ability that used to be featured so prominently in country music, but has fallen by the wayside in the era of songs about drankin' beer, tailgatin', and lovin' God. There's nothing wrong with singing about any of those things, but lately the songwriting in Nashville has been so superficial and pandering. Clark & Co. (namely, Shane McAnally) are trying to change that. My favorite song from 12 Stories is "Stripes", a humorous tale about a cheating husband whose life is spared only because his scorned wife fears what the town will think if they see her wearing a prisoner's suit. "I hate stripes / And orange ain't my color / And if I squeeze that trigger tonight / I'll be wearin' one or the other." This song features a fun sense of humor that is so well-known in classic country music, and I can't help but smile when I hear the song.
