Soooo there's still some edge underground stuff I haven't yet made time to listen to. Kelela, Donald Glover, 7 Street, second half of the Autre Ne Veut album.
But I think out of the big names it's just Arcade Fire remaining and we'll make time there.
Will think more abt how to strucure this, stay tuned and stuff.
Not the best album by a disney princess this year but what puts Tenacious Miley Cee over 1 of her competitors is that hers...if less consistent, felt much more of a curveball. The singles are big growers, Adore You is heterosexual Frank Ocean, My Darl is the second best Future collab of the year and without even knowing exactly what he put out in 2013 that's no small feat. Unexpectedly cohesive what with all of the different genre blends she tries to make work, just overall the kind of trash we needed in a sequence of 13 months with no Rihanna album.
What mindless fun to be had w this one. If u look at the featured artist list for both of their albums, this one is decidedly way less ethnic/Jamaican, which turns out to be a great thing. That roster is what makes this trip as enjoyable as it is, you JUST never know what these no-name losers are about to throw at you. Very loud very melodic very global.
This coulda been better HAD it lived to the expectations set by the two pre-rihlease singles. I was disappointed at first listen because of that but even with all of the trippier song structures coming from tracks #4-11 it NEVER stops being interesting and that's refreshing to say the least esp. with sum1 as aesthetically out-there and unique as Devoncé Knowles. And when you hit the ground running wit that kind of 1-2 punch, what more do you ******s need?
What a disgusting cover artwork. Maybe their worst album actually and def another release to be overshadowed by its own lead single, but the stripped down nature of most of the songs here accompanied by some pretty experimental production still works p well for them. Hm. (vvv i didn't know 'despair' had a music video vvv)
Our Swedish brother tends to get lumped in with the David Guettas and Zedds of the world, and I don't think that's fair at all. #1 hit me up when they snag Best New Music on Pitchfork, but #2 Viic possesses a skill for songcraft and a tendency for innovation that sets him completely apart from all others in his field imo. Wake Me Up is kinda the best thing to come out of both the DJ-as-lead-artist-top40-radio-fodder bandwagon and whatever it is that Mumford and **** started, but aside from that and the other 3 fantastic singles there's a lot of diversity here. Like Dear Boy starts off with a dopish synth wave but then 2 minutes in turns into the alt-dance remix that Lana del Rey wishes she could have gotten a top 10 hit with. Any way, this was a nice surprise.
He will simply never top the House of Balloons mixtape, to the point where the 9 songs originally on it might be his 9 best period, and its bonus track off the Trilogy rih-release would be his 10th. But despite the polarized reception received by the whole project, I think his official debut did a great job of amplifying his sound to something big enough for a major label. Even that ****ing album cover.
Oh baby oh baby U kinda materialized outta thin air & knocked me about this year. Not many people I could just sit back and listen to sing, but this Spanish Broad makes it easy. Also prob have her to thank for inspiring me to voluntarily go and listen to Mariah Carey for the first time ever, but in the end just a very consistent crop of virginal pop r&b songs is what we have here.
