Discussion: Most depressing US states?

Which states seem most depressing and ugly? Either from your experience or what you perceive?

I say any state that doesnt have any coastline aka Middle America, with the exception of Colorado

Most notably depressing states - Missouri, West Virginia, Idaho, Vermont, Michigan, Mississippi, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Indiana, Arkansas -

- Dreary states with high reports of drug abuse and/or crime, lower education, lower income levels and isolation from big cities.

I'd say New Jersey is way more depressing than Pennsylvania.

Ohio and Missouri are beautiful, definitely not ugly. Ohio was highly desirable for settlement way back when. As for most depressing, I think of North Dakota and New Mexico. It doesn't seem like a lot of people live in North Dakota, and most people I've talked to from New Mexico complain about how much it sucks.

new jersey. everyone even says how horrible it is all the time.
mississippi is widely known as the most unhealthy and poorest state, so that one.
i'm kinda surprised to see indiana on there though. they're not that poor and their education isn't that bad, and they actually have some of the best universities in the country (IU, purdue, and notre dame especially), and they have a lot of farmland but they have some pretty big cities too (indianapolis, fort wayne, evansville).

Funny joke, not only does New Jersey have beautiful beaches, it is also in close proximity to the greatest city on earth, NYC. It has a diverse and vibrant population, higher income and education levels, better economy and lower drug use than Pennsylvania, go to the middle of PA and you'll think that you ended up somewhere in Kentucky. Pennsylvania is ugly, bleak, depressing and hopeless.
