About Beauty and the Beast (1991 Soundtrack)
The first (and, to date, only) animated film soundtrack nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys.
"Beauty & the Beast" won the Grammy Awards for Best Song Written Specifically For Film or Television, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Pop Instrumental Performance. It also received nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Beauty & the Beast was the first film in history to have three different songs ("Beauty & the Beast," "Belle," and "Be Our Guest") nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars.
Howard Ashman, the lyricist behind all of Beauty & the Beast's songs died of AIDS before the project was completed. The song's Oscar Award was dedicated to him, and was accepted by his partner.
The pop version of "Beauty & the Beast," recorded by Celiné Dion and Peabo Bryson, started the tradition of having popular artists perform "pop versions" of Disney themes. Peabo Bryson was included in the recording because, at the time, Disney worried that Celiné Dion was too unknown to attract an audience.
The Celiné Dion and Peabo Bryson version of "Beauty & the Beast" peaked at #9 on the Hot 100, marking Disney's first chart appearance in 30 years and establishing Dion as an international superstar.
The American Film Institute ranked "Beauty & the Beast" #62 on their list 100 Years... 100 Songs.
