‘Kingdom Hearts 3’ Will Have More Keyblade Transformations, According To Tetsuya Nomura

The road to “Kingdom Hearts 3” has been rather long and winding for fans of the video game series, although recent news may make the delayed release date worth the wait. In a recent interview with Famitsu, a Japanese gaming magazine, Tetsuya Nomura revealed that Sora’s signature keyblade would no longer just be a simple weapon in the third installment of “Kingdom Hearts.” In the “Birth By Sleep” installment, gamers saw their first glimpse of an advanced keyblade, when the tool transformed into a vehicle. But now Nomura, who serves as game director for "KH3" reveals that there are even more transformations to come. We watched the first keyblade conversion in the preview trailer for the game, which was recently released at the D23 Expo, Sora’s keyblade become a weapon transforming seamlessly into what appeared to be a laser-shooting gun.
While fans were thrilled with the new weapons upgrade, Nomura revealed there is much more to come for Sora and his notable keyblade accessory. “In the trailer, we saw it transform into the shape of a gun, but there are also some other unbelievable transformations,” says Nomura. He adds, “The other day, when we were checking it out, the staff member said ‘it turns into ____’ and I impulsively replied with, ‘Are you serious?’” In addition to the new keyblade capabilities, which Nomura describes as possessing “infinite possibilities,” the KH3 development team is working on new upgrades for the gamer to experience.
New weapons will not be the only new tactic in the game; the second category of keyblade abilities is described by Nomura as "Attraction Flow" which, according to Nomura, is "an evolution of the Free Flow of 'Kingdom Hearts 3D Dream Drop Distance.'" As reported by Kotaku.com, in Japanese "attraction" refers to theme park rides. And in the trailer, we can see that theme park rides and settings heavily influenced the combat, Sora is seen riding iconic Disney World attractions while simultaneously fighting off enemies. Nomura explained that this "Attraction Flow" could be selected depending on the location or enemy.
There’ve been a handful of mornings over the past few years where Tetsuya Nomura, creator of the Kingdom Hearts series and director of Final Fantasy XV, woke up to some pretty interesting news. It turns out, these were the mornings where he awoke to hear word that Disney had purchased another in a litany of interesting companies. From Pixar and Marvel Entertainment to Lucasfilm, Disney has been quickly evolving into an entertainment Goliath.
With news that Disney now owns the rights do these various companies and their respective properties, of course Nomura would get interested and begin imagining the possibilities for those new characters and worlds inside of the Kingdom Hearts universe. In an E3 interview with IGN, he explained, “Whenever I hear of the news, I always say, ‘woah…they’ve done it again.’”
“The first thing I do when I find out this news is contact Disney and see if it’s something I can use [in Kingdom Hearts].”
We followed up by asking him if Disney had ever answered with a yes, to which he replied, “Disney’s companies are all very different. Sometimes the answer is ‘absolutely no,’ and sometimes the answer is, ‘…hmm, we don’t know...’”
Nomura was obviously a bit coy about specific details regarding specific Disney properties, especially considering that Kingdom Hearts III was just announced at Sony’s press conference a few days ago, followed by word that it's coming to Xbox One as well. But he was willing to elaborate a bit more on his relationship with the media giant, saying that, “Disney’s pretty honest. If the situation is really difficult, they’ll say, it’s really difficult. If it’s impossible, they’ll say it’s impossible.
Stay tuned to IGN for much more on our enlightening interview with Tetsuya Nomura, including brand new details on Final Fantasy XV.
I want to get II.5 Remix, but I don't have a PS3. The only reason I got PS2 was for the original Kingdom Hearts. I just got the PSP for BBS (I got the BBS PSP Package). I WILL be getting the PS4 just for KH3. Now, my thoughts on what is going to happen.
-Firstly, the game probably won't be released until at least 2016
- Since DDD left off with the 12 darknesses/Xehanorts going back to where they came, they might come back and try to get the final 13th darkness
- Sora will have to redo the Mark of Mastery Exam while Kairi and Lea train under Yen Sid. (I remember reading somewhere that the reason Lea can bear a keyblade is he accidentally touched someone's keyblade, performing a Keyblade Inheritance Ceremony)
- And there will be some epic battle resulting in the clashing of the 13 darknesses and 7 lights, finally revealing the true Kingdom Hearts
For those who are behind or confused, GameTrailers did a Kingdom Hearts timeline
I would totally do this, but I have every intention of playing/"watching" every Kingdom Hearts game through my PS3 and my 3DS this year. I want the story first hand, cause while I feel like my knowledge is pretty rusted over, you know, a decade, I definitely wanna refresh it with direct gameplay.
This is an awesome video, though. Let me put this is in the first post. Thanks!

No problem
Also, people uploaded "movies" of the games. (All the cutscenes in one video)
I can't wait for KHIII Currently replaying all the games from the beginning because my knowledge has gotten kinda rusty. Plus Square makes some of their franchises' plots branch out in sooo many different directions
I ONLY CARE about Namine, Xion and Roxas finally stepping out of their nobody existences and living a life of their own. I AM STILL CRYING TEARS OF SORROW at "Only three days of summer left..."
