"I was always focused," Derulo says. "I didn’t spend a lot of time doing things that I didn’t think would make me great. I studied all kinds of dance, all types of music. I got good grades. I started hitting the recording studio around 13."

Derulo's trick for drinking without dealing with a next-day-ruining hangover is to have a vodka soda: “You’re hydrating as you’re dehydrating," he says.
3. He Gets Fishy
A common meal for the R&B singer-songwriter is tuna right out of the can, water and some energy powder spoonfuls. Derulo says the powder is "like caffeine -- it gets you pumped before you work out."
4. His Snack Food Approach: Out of Sight, Out of Mind
"No chips, no M&M’s, none of that,” Derulo says. “How are you going to choose between Doritos and celery? If it’s in my face, I’m going to eat that motherf---er.” Instead, Derulo goes with almonds and coconuts.

Practice makes perfect: “Songwriting is a muscle. The more you do it, the better you get at it.”
