Sure, just cause it doesn't float your boat doesn't mean it's not good.

Can ATRL be trusted when it comes to music?
While I know everyone has their own taste in music and what good music is, there will ALWAYS be a standard for what 'aesthetically' good music is in the world. That said, outside of Ace Reject, Captain Planet, and a few other far reachers who take the time to appreciate and listen to all genres of music and artists, both popular and unknown to the masses, ATRL lacks these type of members. Most of the members here are pop followers, and while many claim they listen to a variety of music in all different genres, they simply mean Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears, Rihanna, and Taylor Swift in a raw sense. As long as Ive been on this forum Ive watched people say some of the dumbest **** ever when it comes time for Grammy Nominations and Award Wins no matter the show. Rarely is the average member ever right when it comes time for important awards or critical acclaim decisions and I see it's getting worse with time. On ATRL masterpieces are considered to be things like 'Femme Fatale' and 'Loud'. And things like '4' and '21' are called good albums or boring. But then when award show time comes everyone whines and cries about the real artists getting all the nominations and awards because pop music is not taken seriously.
So I ask you, is the average ATRL opinion on music a joke?

I know what you mean. I listen to alot of Rock and Indie/Rock but there is just nowhere to talk about it. The convo either goes nowhere or the thread flops.

Most of the members are kids who like fun, catchy, undemanding music.

I know that, but even then they should still at least know what actual music that took more than 5 minutes to write sounds like.

Sometimes, yes.
Most of the time, no.

And I have nothing against people who like generic pop, cause I listen to some generic pop, not a lot but I digress. You can tell the people who also listen to different genres or non-commerical music because when something is good they will often vocalize their like for it, regardless of their opinion on the artist singing it.

Different people are just naturally inclined to look for different things in music, and this can just be a function of age or background (things that contribute to the formation of who you are as a person, for that moment in time, at least). At the end of the day you can only attempt to justify on a conscious, intellectual level the visceral response you've had to a piece of music (or any art), but it still remains a visceral response.
I don't really believe in "real" music as opposed to some other alternative. If someone feels moved by something why isn't it real? Whether or not you find your tastes lining up with most members of a community is another question. I can recognize that certain people may not share my tastes/interests while naturally gravitating to those who do just like you would anyone you share something in common.
It's nice for people to try to broaden their horizons and find other artists they may actually like who aren't in the mainstream, but as long as they're not assuming some false sense of superiority while not doing so (which may be the key), I don't really have a problem with people just liking what they like.

It's a joke. Almost all of the posters on this forum are not worth discussing music with seriously as they only know the non-singles of about 10 artists. I've only ever had a serious, engaging conversation with Ace Reject and eli's_rhythm.

Most members can recognize good music, but it's mostly within the pop genre. The music taste on ATRL isn't very cultured.

I agree with all of this, but that isn't really my issue, while we can prefer what we want, shouldn't we also be able to identify something that is aesthetically excellent instead of calling it boring no matter if we prefer it or not?

True but I rarely see those types of members online. Which is saddening. Unless they're either in RT or some other unpopular section.

In my opinion, some youngsters in here need to educate themselves when it comes to history of music. They act like all they know is the typical five females artists we here all the time in here. There was a thread where some members who did not who Stevie Knicks was. I remember there was some members in here that did not know who The Beatles were.
I am one of the few in here that like other stuff besides the typical pop music. I like everything.

But people will always differ in their opinion of what is "excellent."

People still don't know who Stevie Nicks is. I made an album anticipation thread or some other thread about her and only a few posters recognized her.
I've mentioned her in several threads and someone went "I don't even know who she is."

Honestly, the average atrl user has the musical taste of a 12 year old, so I do not take most users' reviews, critiques, etc. seriously.

I agree with this. But because that's what happens to the rock and indie threads, a lot of users like Ace Reject and Cap10Planet who have extremely varied and wide musical taste (like myself, to be honest) aren't able to showcase their musical tastes and knowledge.
