Jack White, Frank Ocean, More Get Big Grammy Boost on iTunes
Nothing sells music like national TV exposure. An examination of iTunes and Amazon sales ranks during the Grammy broadcast shows the immediate impact the event had on the sales of titles nominated for Album of the Year.
Quote:
Fun.'s performance at around 8:30 p.m. ET didn't immediately improve the band's position on iTunes and Amazon, but its iTunes album rank started to move up around 9:00 p.m. after the band won the "Song of the Year" award with "We Are Young." Some Night's album rank at Amazon MP3 barely budged all evening, remaining at #4 until getting to #3 at 12:45 a.m. (the Lumineers' self-titled album remained Amazon MP3's #1 digital album all evening thanks in part to a $3.99 sale price).

Mumford and Sons' Babel, winner of Album of the Year, had less room for improvement than its peers. Babel had already sold 1.7 million units, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and was ranked #6 at iTunes, #2 at Amazon and #11 at Amazon MP3 (with the help of a $3.99 sale price). Babel saw its iTunes rank improve slightly after the band's performance ended right around 9:00 p.m.

Jack White was the greatest gainer of the Album of the Year nominees. Blunderbuss started the evening at #90 on iTunes, #41 on Amazon's CD bestsellers list and #123 on the Amazon MP3 album list. The album didn't move much on Amazon over the course of the broadcast but on iTuns it dropped from #80 at around 10:45 p.m. to #44 at around 11:00 p.m. after his performance and sat at #27 at 12:45 a.m.

Frank Ocean may have had the most to gain from the Grammys. His debut album Channel Orange was nominated for Album of the Year and he was nominated for Best New Artist. Channel Orange steadily improved from around #20 at the beginning of the broadcast to #12 by the 12:45 a.m.

The Black Keys' El Camino didn't budge at Amazon -- it was on sale for $2.99 at Amazon MP3 -- but was able to climb from #18 to #7 by the end of the evening on iTunes.

fun. and Rihanna will also get a boost from their performances on the annual awards show
While official numbers aren't in yet, sources are suggesting that some of the biggest sales winners from Sunday's Grammy Awards include Mumford & Sons, the Lumineers, Rihanna and fun.
Music sales for the week ending Feb. 10, as tracked by Nielsen SoundScan, will not be released until Wednesday morning (Feb. 13). However, label sources have indicated that a number of albums and songs are due for big gains when the figures come out.
Among the albums heading for a gain of 50% of more compared to the previous week are Album of the Year winner "Babel" by Mumford & Sons, fun.'s "Some Nights," the Black Keys' "El Camino," Frank Ocean's "Channel ORANGE," Miguel's "Kaleidoscope Dream," Jack White's "Blunderbuss" and Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger."
Of those, the largest percentage gain might belong to Ocean's set, which could post a jump of 120%. A week ago, "Channel ORANGE" moved 5,000 according to SoundScan, so it might have jumped to 11,000 in the week ending Sunday.
"Babel" looks to be the largest seller for the week overall, as it's on course to move around 55,000. That would be a jump of 50% compared to the previous frame, when it shifted 36,000.
Grammys 2013: 15 Things You Didn't See On TV
All of these albums will likely have an even bigger gain next week (ending Feb. 17), when a full week's worth of post-Grammys impact will be felt. This week's charts will only reflect sales generated in the hours during and after the show, through midnight on Sunday night (Feb. 10).
In terms of digital songs, the largest seller of the songs performed on the show could be the Lumineers' "Ho Hey." Forecasters suggest that it sold 140,000 in the week ending Feb. 10. That could translate to a 17% increase for the sales week.
However, "Ho Hey" is a current hit, so thus it was already selling well -- and had perhaps little room to grow. It might be more interesting to look at those songs that will have the largest percentage increases in sales.
Right now, those are looking like Rihanna's new single "Stay" (featuring Mikky Ekko) and Miguel's "Adorn." Both should gain by more than 200% in the week ending Feb. 10, with "Stay" selling perhaps 65,000 and "Adorn" moving 40,000. For the latter tune, which was released last August as a single, it will mark the song's best sales week yet.
Also aiming for big increases are Mumford & Sons' "I Will Wait" (up over 100% to 48,000), fun.'s "Carry On" (up 131% to 60,000) and "We Are Young" (up 150% to 50,000). "Wait" and "Carry" were both performed on the show, while "We Are Young" won the Grammy Award for best song.
