Baltimore Riots: Discrepancy Over Shooting; Tensions Back
2015 Baltimore Riots

BALTIMORE — In a pair of gestures on Sunday that suggested that this riot-scarred city was staggering toward normalcy, the National Guard began to pull its troops from Baltimore, and the mayor lifted a curfew that, after several days of relative calm, had come under mounting criticism.
“Effective immediately, I have rescinded my order instituting a citywide curfew,” Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said in a statement on Sunday. Baltimore had lived under five consecutive nights of restrictions that were imposed in the wake of violent unrest connected to the death of Freddie Gray, who died of injuries he suffered while in police custody.
“My goal has always been to not have the curfew in place a single day longer than was necessary,” Ms. Rawlings-Blake added.
Gov. Larry Hogan later said he supported her decision, and he announced that the Guard had started to reduce its force here.
“The mayor and I both talked and agreed that we think it’s time to get the community back to normal again,” said Mr. Hogan, who expected the military’s pullout to be complete by sometime on Wednesday. “It’s been a very hard week, but we’ve kept everybody safe.” [...]
BALTIMORE (AP) — Rioters plunged part of Baltimore into chaos Monday, torching a pharmacy, setting police cars ablaze and throwing bricks at officers hours after thousands mourned the man who died from a severe spinal injury he suffered in police custody.
The governor declared a state of emergency and called in the National Guard to restore order, and Attorney General Loretta Lynch, in her first day on the job, said she would send Justice Department officials to the city in coming days. A weeklong, daily curfew was imposed beginning Tuesday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., the mayor said. At least 15 officers were hurt, and some two dozen people were arrested. Two officers remained hospitalized, police said. [...]
Officers wearing helmets and wielding shields occasionally used pepper spray to keep the rioters back. For the most part, though, they relied on line formations to keep protesters at bay. [...]
Emergency officials were constantly thwarted as they tried to restore calm. Firefighters trying to put out a blaze at a CVS store were hindered by someone who sliced holes in a hose connected to a fire hydrant, spraying water all over the street and nearby buildings. [...]
The smell of burned rubber wafted in the air in one neighborhood where youths were looting a liquor store. Police stood still nearby as people drank looted alcohol. Glass and trash littered the streets, and other small fires were scattered about. One person from a church tried to shout something from a megaphone as two cars burned. [...]
The riot broke out just as high school let out, and at a key city bus depot for student commuters around Mondawmin Mall, a shopping area northwest of downtown Baltimore. It shifted about a mile away later to the heart of an older shopping district and near where Gray first encountered police. Both commercial areas are in African-American neighborhoods.
Later in the day, people began looting clothing and other items from stores at the mall, which became unprotected as police moved away from the area. About three dozen officers returned, trying to arrest looters but driving many away by firing pellet guns and rubber bullets. [...]
this is so tragic
How is looting liquor stores and destroying the community helping the cause. I understand the destroying police cars, but turning on your own city/community is so dumb
The police officers shouldn't have thought they could get away with murder. I don't condone rioting at all but I can't blame them
Nnnn, innocent people are the ones going to be affected by this. Not only do they have civilians ruining their lives, I'm pretty sure the police will be even more hesitant to help them. What kind of self sabotage.

Innocent people are already affected by this! Freddie Gray, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice etc.!
You can't expect people to think rationally when innocent people are being killed daily by the people who are supposed to protect them. I'm not saying it's right but think about it if you were in their position
Innocent people are already affected by this! Freddie Gray was innocent!

Baltimore's always had a bunch of ruffians though
I am appalled at the Freddie Gray death, but let's not act like Baltimore isn't near close to being the murder and robbery and HIV and rape capital of the U.S.A.

So they retaliate against police killing innocent people by robbing stores? What kind of logic?
