Sonequa Martin-Green Will Lead Star Trek: Discovery
Quote:
The casting of Martin-Green brings to a close a lengthy search for a lead on “Discovery,” which has struggled with delays since being given a greenlight by CBS last year. Original showrunner Bryan Fuller had at Comic-Con this summer indicated that he wanted to cast a woman of color in the lead role, citing inspiration from Mae Jamison, the first African-American female astronaut and Nichelle Nichols, the lone African-American and lone female cast member on the original “Star Trek” series.

Another evolution from Trek tradition: Unlike the previous series in the franchise, the main protagonist of Discovery won’t be a captain (at least, not initially). Fuller described Martin-Green’s character as a “lieutenant commander with caveats.”

Martin-Green represents the first African-American woman to lead the cast of a Trek ensemble, fulfilling a years-long goal by the project’s original showrunner Bryan Fuller. The series will also have the TV franchise’s first openly gay character, a lieutenant played by Anthony Rapp.
I'm taking a wait and see approach. There have been so many production delays and problems with this show. I honestly will not believe that it exists until I see a pilot. Discovery was supposed to air next month. Now, they say it's coming out in May. So many false starts.
I hope that doesn't mean she will die in the second half of the season, though I'm afraid she will There are quite a few women left and I think one or two of them will be gone by the end of the season
