The debut album from American Idol winner Jordin Sparks kicks of my top ten albums of 2007. The self-titled debut from the 17 year old beauty is filled with laid back pop tunes, emotional ballads, and a club banger a la "Shy Boy". The album kicks off with the first single "Tattoo" which is clearly a reminse of Beyonce's "Irreplaceable" but then again it was produced by Stargate. Then it goes into the mid-tempo "Once Step At A Time" where Jordin sings some early Hilary Duff lyrics "Its like learning to fly or falling in love" over a poppy beat. Then it goes straight to the emotional ballad "No Air" a duet with R&B sensation Chris Brown which is clearly THE STANDOUT track on the album. The only downside to "No Air" is that Chris Brown's voice gets lost as Jordin's powerful vocals take over, but I guess its agrueable if thats even a downside at all. Then we have "Freeze" which clearly is a reminse of Furtado's "Say It Right" but the random voice screaming freeze plus the chilling beat really makes you believe your in some type of ice land. "Shy Boy" track 5 is the only song on the album I'd label as a club banger, even though the lyrics are pretty weak the fun dance-able beat makes up for it. Other highlights of the album include "Young And In Love" which makes you just wanna clap your hands along with "Permanant Monday", but I think we all wish are Friday's were permanant. Jordin also thinks "God Loves Ugly" and sings nursery rhyme style in "See My Side" and ends the album with her idol winning ballad "This Is My Now". Overall if your looking for a good pop album to bump in your car, then this is the one!!!

#09: Aly & AJ - Insomniatic
Sister-act Aly & AJ try a more grown up approach with second disc 'Insomniatic' with actual good results. The girls are through singing about child-kidnappings and feeling put down by others from thier first album and move on to bigger and better things. The album kicks off with the catchy first single "Potential Breakup Song". This song defientely got stuck in alot of heads this year as the girls insist they WANT THIER STUFF BACK!, but my favorite line would have to be "you can send it in a box, I don't care just drop it off". Moving on to track 2 as they head back to the pop-rock sound of thier first disc sings "you didn't ask me for my number/cause you already got my number", till this day I don't understrand that line. "Closure" track 3 also follows the pop-rock sound as the insist they threw thier X-boyfriend's shirt in the trash. "Division" slows things down a bit with a sound that reminds me of Destiny's Child back when there was 4 active members. Then we have "Like It Or Leave It" as the girls sing you can like me or leave me over a Kelly Clarkson "Since U Been Gone" beat. Then "Like Whoa" goes back to the pop-techo-hip hop sound of "Potential Breakup Song" as the girls take you on a roller coaster ride. The title track "Insomniatic" which is probably one of the best song lyrically sings "Just like I do with you/Are you left thirsty too?" then theres "Silence" which has a country sound towrads the end of it and then "If I Could Have You Back" which sounds like your playing a Mario game if you listen closely. Then theres "Blush" probably the most MATURE song the girls have ever recorded as they sing "It won't lead me to your bed". But "I'm Here" which is the standout ballad of this album. As Aly does piano duty AJ tells you to look no further cause I'm right here. The album ends with the "Chemicals React" remix which was clearly un-necessary. I'm really impressed the girls wrote EVERY SONG on this album plus take on guitar & piano duties, DOUBLE THE TROUBLE! Overall if you don't feel like sleeping and wanna stay up all night, give into the Insomnia and press play on this CD.
