This is not a thread for Ciara and Rihanna stans to battle. It's a thread to bridge the gap between their most successful eras.

In this case, I want to just discuss U.S. success.

Artist #1: Ciara
Album: Goodies
Release Date: September 28, 2004

Goodies was Ciara's debut album. It debuted at #3 with over 124k copies sold in its first week. The album produced three top 5 hits, including the #1 single "Goodies," which spent 7 consecutive weeks at #1. The album went on to sell over 2.7 million copies in the U.S. and is certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA. During this era, she managed to garner two more top 5 singles ("Lose Control" with Missy Elliott and Fat Man Scoop and "Like You" with Bow Wow) as a featured artist and managed to win a Grammy Award for Best Short Music Video for Missy Elliott's "Lose Control".

Artist #2: Rihanna
Album: Good Girl Gone Bad
Release Date: June 5, 2007 (Later re-released)

Good Girl Gone Bad was Rihanna's third studio album. It debuted at #2 with sales 168k copies. The album produced 6 singles (9 including the re-release), including the juggernaut #1 smash, "Umbrella," which featured Jay-Z. The album went on to sell 2.6 million copies in the U.S. and was certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA. Rihanna won her very first Grammy Award for "Umbrella" with Jay-Z in Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

I am just referring to U.S. success. Feel free to add to, correct or discuss anything posted here. And do not start any stan wars. I'm not here for that. Save that **** for SYG.

"Goodies" shat in album sales and partly singles-wise too. One bad single choice killed that era, she should have released "Hotline", it was a guaranteed smash.

And "Thug Style."

"Pick Up The Phone" and "Next To You" too.

It sold 100k more than GGGB.
And GGGB shat in WW Sales.

They should have kept releasing singles. I'm not sure what they were thinking with "And I." Love the song, but it wasn't single material, not even in 2005. I remember her saying on TRL that "Pick Up The Phone" or "Thug Style" was going to be her fourth single.

I do not care about WW sales. I'm comparing U.S. success. Ciara's album did well for a DEBUT and an album that opened up modestly. And it didn't get a re-release either.

I always thought "Hotline" would be the 4th singles, she even performed it at 2005 Vibe Awards.

I think "Hotline" was a choice too. And it would have been a great one. It would have most likely been her first major hit without a rapper. I remembered when she performed it at the Vibe Awards. The video would have been hot.

IKR? :/ I think it could have performed on charts like "1, 2 Step" and "Oh".

Shows how much of a force Ciara was meant to be.

I don't know what happened to Ciara, her 1st album was brilliant but her 2nd was so disappointing

Even though I think it's amazing that Goodies outsold GGGB with only FOUR singles (while the latter had NINE), I feel that the GGGB era was more memorable, it made Rihanna a SUPERSTAR and started her a SOLO ARENA tour, Ciara wasn't even close to that, she was a supporting act for bow wow and Chris Brown

Ciara couldn't have gotten a solo arena tour on her debut album. I don't know any artist who was able to do that with their very first album. But Ciara never had a huge arena tour, so IDK.

Gaga, Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Alicia etc were all able to to Arenas with their first album.

I think that Ciara has a lot of unused potential.

Both Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus come to mind. I think their tours were mix of theatres + arenas.

the closest thing she got to is a CLUB tour and that was on her second album

Beyonce was already an established artist due to Destiny's Child.

I'll give you the other ones. But I don't think Ciara and even Rihanna during their debuts had enough star power to lead a solo arena tour. Rihanna definitely didn't have it during her debut year. Let's stick to #s and awards here.
