'Iron Man 3' Scored 2nd Biggest Open in U.S; $680M WW
Updates:
Quote:
Disney's Iron Man 3 kicked off the summer movie season in a big way with a massive estimated opening weekend take of $175.3 million. The performance exceeded the already lofty pre-release expectations for the highly anticipated superhero sequel starring Robert Downey Jr. (which had tended to fall in the $150 million to $170 million range). In the process Iron Man 3 scored the second largest opening weekend performance of all-time (behind only the $207.44 million start of last year's Marvel's The Avengers and ahead of the $169.19 million take of 2011's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2). There is no doubt that the goodwill with audiences created by The Avengers helped out Iron Man 3 this weekend, as did the franchise's move to 3D. Without taking into account ticket price inflation, Iron Man 3 opened 37 percent stronger than the $128.12 million debut of 2010's Iron Man 2 and 16 percent stronger than the $151.12 million start of 2007's Spider-Man 3.
A very encouraging sign for Iron Man 3 is that the film held up surprisingly well on Saturday. After opening with $68.31 million on Friday (which included $15.6 million from late night Thursday showings), Iron Man 3 fell just 9 percent on Saturday to gross $62.24 million. That was a stronger first Saturday percentage hold than The Avengers experienced (it fell 14 percent) and could be an early sign that Iron Man 3 is skewing even heavier towards family audiences than The Avengers did. It is also likely a sign of strong early word of mouth (the film received a healthy A rating on CinemaScore) and could have a bit to do with Cinco de Mayo falling on Sunday. Disney is estimating that Iron Man 3 will fall 28 percent on Sunday to gross $44.75 million. That would give the film an opening weekend to Friday ratio of 2.57 to 1.
Iron Man 3 remained very strong overseas this weekend, as it grossed $175.9 million from 54 foreign markets. That brings the film's overseas total to $504.8 million and current global haul to a mighty $680.1 million.

Disney is reporting that Iron Man 3 opened with a strong $68.312 million on Friday, including $15.6 million from Thursday night previews . That marks a 30 percent increase over the $52.4 million opening day of Iron Man 2 three years ago, while sitting about 14 percent below the first day take of The Avengers (a record $80.8 million).
The relatively unknown nature of Thursday's 9pm shows could skew historical opening day-to-weekend ratios, but for now, we're projecting a $169 million debut weekend.
Iron Man 3 rossed $37.7 million overseas on Thursday to reach a $345.4million overseas total. Combined with Thursday's $15.6 million take from North American previews, Iron Man 3 has now grossed $361 million globally. The film broke opening day records in Russia and the Ukraine, already surpassing the $312 million total overseas gross of Iron Man 2.

Sources tell BoxOffice that Iron Man 3 has set a new midnight show record in China with $2.1 million (13 million RMB) from approximately 2,500 shows at 1,100 locations with 300,000 admission. The record previously belonged to Transformers: Dark of the Moon with around $1.9 million (12 million RMB). The same sources say that a $100 million cume is a lock for IM3, which means it would top the $91.4 million cume of The Avengers.
Reports out of China indicate that IM3 is playing well. Excitement for the film is palpable with plenty of sold-out shows and huge lines. Any Americans staying in China may not be able to follow scenes that were only included in the Chinese version because they are being shown in Mandarin without any English subtitles. (The no-subtitle footage lasts about 3 minutes.) Yet the China-only scenes are playing to attentive, appreciative moviegoers. Chinese star Fan Bingbing's cameo appearance is reportedly going over VERY well, so props to Disney and DMG for getting that right. One main problem is that many moviegoers are laughing at blatant product placement for Chinese items.

Iron Man 3 broke multiple box office records this weekend, grossing $195.3 million in 42 territories a week ahead of its U.S. release.
Iron Man 3 recorded the highest opening weekend ever in Argentina, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam. The third entry in Marvel's Iron Man franchise is #1 in every market and now holds the record for the biggest opening weekend of all time in Latin America and Asia Pacific.
The U.K. leads the charge, bringing in $21.5 million of the overseas total. South Korea is not far behind with $19.2 million. The film grossed $18.4 million in Australia and won the second highest opening weekend of all time in Mexico with $16.1 million. Iron Man 3 grossed $14.7 million in France and holds Brazil's third biggest opening weekend with $12.3 million.

Iron Man 3 continued its international rollout. Now in almost half of the international marketplace, the Marvel/Disney actioner starring Robert Downey Jr. has grossed a staggering $36.5M in just two weekdays of release — Wednesday and Thursday. The film has opened bigger than The Avengers in several markets including Korea, Argentina, Hong Kong, Philippines, Taiwan and Indonesia. Leading markets include Australia, where the film has grossed a commanding $8.1 million ahead of the weekend.

Have seen the film. It is a well-rounded and ultra-entertaining pop corn flick.
With some series-best twists and moments. Definitely recommendable!!

I just wonder what people see in this movie, Iron Man is such a useless superhero, leave alone to have 3 movies about him

In French , Iron Man 3 scored numerous records by attracting 318,216 spectators, it is the best start of the year and best start in the franchise by bringing 114,000 more viewers than Iron Man 2. Especially, Iron Man 3 has the luxury to do better than The Avengers' 302,730 entries.

I assume you mean in France. I saw it yesterday and there were a lot of us so I am happy. The movie is so good, I loved it. I love everything Robert does anyway.
Like 1/4 of us stayed in the theater after the ending waiting for the special scene at the end. It was so long but we stayed, some were like I am sure there is not going to be anything but I don't want to regret not staying.

That's not how I perceived the movie. I don't see Iron Man as an useless hero either, he is just not surreal, just a common and successful man with the need to protect. Just like Bruce Wayne, he doesn't have super powers but his intelligence allows him to invent gadgets in order to protect the planet. The only difference is that Tony is arrogant, amusing and witty while Bruce is tame and almost "pure".

Yeah, I translate the French article by google translator, but I failed to spot that out while editing.

You're correct. I'm just using his words to make him interested and see if it is possible to trick him into seeing the movie

What's "Frence"?
I hope Thor does better. No doubt it'll deserve it.

Have you seen the trailer? There is nothing that makes me excited except for the return of Loki.
I was not that pleased with the first chapter, I thought it was cute but nothing more. I do hope they bring it this time. After the Avengers, all those movies need to step it up and I think the goal was fulfilled for IM3.
