There are five main genres I use: Rock, Pop, Rap, Techno and Other.
1. Rock includes most things guitar driven with sung, shouted or screamed vocals.
2. Pop includes urban pop, non-urban top 40 pop and "underground" pop. Hard to describe. The primary instrument may be an electric guitar, acoustic guitar, piano, synthesizer, sampler or anything else I haven't listed. Vocals are usually sung in pop music.
3. Rap includes most things with rapped vocals. May use samplers, turntables, and/or live instruments.
4. Techno includes anything electronic instrument (synthesizer, sampler) oriented like trance, house, euro-dance, techno proper, big beat, jungle, drum & bass, and ambient.
5. Other is everything that doesn't fit in the first four genres like Country, Classical music, Jazz and Polka.
