Millennials Are More Racist Than They Think
Quote:
The next generation of Americans, they say, is “post-racial.”Unfortunately, closer examination of the data suggests that millennials aren’t racially tolerant, they’re racially apathetic: They simply ignore structural racism rather than try to fix it.
The study found that young whites have the same level of racial stereotypes as their parents.
There is reason for an even deeper worry: The possibility that the veneer of post-racial America will lead to more segregation.
In a study using American National Election Studies—a survey of Americans before and after each presidential election—Vincent Hutchings finds, “younger cohorts of Whites are no more racially liberal in 2008 than they were in 1988.” My own analysis of the most recent data reveals a similar pattern: Gaps between young whites and old whites on support for programs that aim to further racial equality are very small compared to the gaps between young whites and young blacks.
Numerous studies find that the election of President Barack Obama has made whites, particularly young whites, sanguine about racial disparities in America. One study surveyed 509 people of all races before and after the 2008 election about their perceptions of discrimination against blacks. The youngest third in the sample were 11.7 percent less likely to perceive discrimination in the wake of Obama’s election than they were before, while the oldest third was 8.5 percent less likely.
In the recent MTV study cited above, 62 percent of millennials (58 percent of people of color, 64 percent of whites) agreed that “having a Black President demonstrates that racial minority groups have the same opportunities as white people.”
Only 39 percent of white millennials believe “white people have more opportunities today than racial minority groups.” By contrast, 65 percent of people of color feel that whites have differential access to jobs and other opportunities.

The conservative stance on racism is to deny structural racism exists and therefore deny that the solution to racism lies in structural changes. Instead, conservatives view the way to end racial disparities as simply ignoring the issue and treating everyone equally. While this sentiment sounds nice, it means that children who are born into poverty and face structurally racist housing, criminal justice and education systems will never have equal opportunity.
A 2012 Public Religion Institute poll found that 58 percent of white millennials say discrimination affects whites as much as it affects people of color. Only 39 percent of Hispanic millennials and 24 percent of African-American millennials agree.
This is the future of race in America. If young Americans buy into his vision of a colorblind society—and a large literature suggests they do—white America and black America will diverge further, creating a permanent underclass in which people of color are denied equitable access to the American dream.

I don't think millenials are more racist than any other past generation, the truth is racism will never end.
But please stop the whole "White discrimination" nonsense. White people just need to collectively take the L and realize that because of their awful forefathers, minorities are forever allowed to clown them and speak out against them. It's the least blacks, native americans, Mexicans, Asians, and any other group can enjoy. White people still own most of the world, so stop trying to act like you're the oppressed ones. Especially straight, white men.

Young whites and all whites basically are still benefitting from slavery and everything their forefathers did so they're all racist unless they prove otherwise

That would be assuming that all countries had slavery or contributed in it when that is not the case but I see where you're coming from.

This tbh. Young whites are still very ignorant on this country's history and how it should affect their behavior today

Am I the only one who literally doesn't care about the bigger picture of racism? I won't discriminate anyone, and won't let anyone discriminate me. The fact that some of you think it is ok to discriminate white people is astounding.

But I don't think it's okay to casually 'clown' against white people for no justified reason. You have to be making a point somehow. And I say this as an Asian guy.

I think every race can be racist, people act like white people are the only racists out there, but there are blacks who are racist too. I was surprised to grow up with black guys in my school who were racist, because I thought they'd know better seeing what their parents and grandparents went through.

There was a study needed to notice this?

Black people, or people of colour, can't be racist because racism is the systematic oppression of people who did not set up the system (white people versus every other POC), which is not just institutionalised but embedded into every fabric of society, from the education system, justice system, media, etc. For that reason, people of colour can't be racist because we do not have a system that can oppress one another, neither do we benefit from racism like white people have been since the beginning of time. The word you're looking for is prejudice.
White people created racism to dehumanise and degrade non-whites. Even if you think you're not a reflection of your ancestors, you’re a white person and that word carries weight.

How exactly are whites still benefiting from slavery? If it were even true, how it would automatically make them racist?
I have a feeling I know how you are going to answer this so go ahead, I'm ready.

How is that fair? White people are forever allowed to be made fun of because of their ancestors? What about people like me, I'm white, 100% Polish, my ancestors were
not part of this and were treated like slaves themselves for a large part of history... but it's ok to make jokes about me being white?

I only examined the graphs, but they are so pointless...
Of course there are not many young white people supporting affirmative action for minorities. Why would they support it?!

It doesn't matter if you want to call it racism or something else, treating someone differently and badly just because of their race is wrong, period.
