While Zara Larsson has made her distaste for Chris Brown pretty clear over the past year, she has recently made note of the way race impacts the way we view people.
In her
newest Swedish podcast with Noel Flike, Zara discussed how the media glorified Johnny Depp during his domestic violence scandal against his girlfriend, and feels the media's positive depiction of Depp was due to his whiteness.
Zara even goes on to mention how the way media influences society could be why she and others have such a negative reaction to Chris Brown, because the media portrays black men in a much worse way than white men for committing similar, or even identical crimes.
Popjustice user Stmated offers a translation of the exchange:
Quote:
Zara: But then you also have to be aware that media, especially in the US, is racist as ****. Like... Look at Johnny Depp, with his chaotic divorce from his wife Amber. She says she has suffered... assaults. Abusive. That he's been very abusive.
That's completely ****ed up, but then media decides to say:
"Oh god, what's happening? Johnny Depp, finally single! Wohoo!"
Takes a nice picture from a modelling gig, or from the red carpet.
But when Chris Brown assaults Rihanna, they choose a mugshot.
Or he's in court, with his orange jail clothes.
Noel: Or he's in the club, looking kinda crazy.
Zara: I think my Chris Brown... contempt is as big as it is because I see him in... I mean... Mainstream media loves to write about that person. It doesn't justify what he says and stands for, of course. But... I think people get it shoved in their faces all the time. Just because he's... well, black. I really do think so.
