Janet vs Madonna, Beyonce vs Lady GaGa
Quote:
Way back in the 1990s, two female megastars fought for the title of Queen of Pop. One was shy, friendly and very gracious and America's sweetheart. Basically, America's sweetheart. The other was rude, loud and wasn't afraid of saying what she felt. Basically, America looked to hear what she had to say. One was Janet Jackson, the other was Madonna.
What separated the two were their off-CD personalities. Janet's off-CD personality hardly reflected her on-CD personality while Madonna's did. Janet sang about bondage and S&M on 1997's The Velvet Rope, but when asked about it would burst into a fit of giggles. Madonna sang about religion in 1989's Like A Prayer and when asked about it she would say "F*ck God".
They were both stellar entertainers, songwriters, singers and dancers. Their elaborate concert tours (1993's janet. Tour and The Girlie Show Tour) set the standard for female performers everywhere. Gone were the days of singing in front of three female dancers. Dancing had become just as important as singing and even Mariah Carey tried her best to keep up.
20 years later, the same battle is taking place between two other female superstars, Beyonce and Lady GaGa. Beyonce doesn't have Janet's shyness, but she is America's latest sweetheart. Lady GaGa isn't rude or loud, but she shocked America and the world with her antics. Her fashion to be exact.
Beyonce's songs are wildly popular on the radio and everyone loves her. She hasn't had much scandal and remains humble and clear-headed. Lady GaGa's songs are popular too, but it seems nowadays that her personality, not her music, has become a part of a cultural phenomenon. She isn't afraid of shocking the masses and she does this every time.
However, as products, Janet and Beyonce have always been more dependent on appealing to a more conservative crowd, and thus, they has been far more careful in ensuring their relations to that demographic are somewhat sustained.
The one incident which nearly destroyed Janet's career, the "Nipplegate", would have a similar effect on Beyonce's if it ever happened to her. They would react the same way; they would apologize, despite it being nothing more than an accident.
If such a thing would have happened to Lady GaGa or Madonna, they wouldn't have apologized and instead been rebellious, defiant and a true authoritative figure in the industry.
So who would America pick to be the Queen of Pop? America's sweetheart or America's latest controversy?

I'd go for America's sweethearts any day. Just my thoughts.

Hmm, I LOVE Janet, but I just like some of Madonna's stuff.
I really dig both GaGa and Beyonce and what they bring to this terrible music industry. Don't know here.

I love all of these performers so much. But if I had to pick, I would have to choose Gaga, considering she tends to more creative things than Beyonce and things that will help her become an icon in the long run.

Janet has never been dependent on appealing to the conservative crowd...pre and post nipple-gate.

I'll always prefer Janet but Madonna is the Queen of Pop and I love her to death.
If anything has cemented Madonna's reign, it's her longevity vs. the rest. Janet is done, Mariah had her comeback and then fell off again, Whitney and Celine are either irrelevant in the US or just irrelevant generally; Madonna has been able to maintain a level of success and tabloid attention that the other ladies could not manage.

Okay I'm sorry, but let's be honest, Janet is more talented than Madonna. I don't care about Madonna's long career, sales doesn't determine talent.

lmao this is so hard, because Janet = Madonna for me - in the sense that they both take fifth place to Kylie in my heart (she has 1-4, deal with it).
Beyonce will ALWAYS bee (pun intended) number one in terms of the new generation for me. ALWAYS.

Lie, Beyonce would bounce back without a problem. People thought Janet pulled that stunt on purpose because she was already well past her prime and was fighting to stay relevant in a world where Beyonce was running Pop & R&B.

I sort of agree w/ Captain.
I've always loved Janet, and Madonna has some cute records that I like.
Bey ALWAYS come first though, and then Lady Gaga.

I think you'll be a better man if you let Kylie into your heart. But you don't even **** with Like a Prayer, so we don't see eye to eye?
And I have never and will never be here for Whitney and her technically perfect but utterly soulless voice or her underwhelming (I'm being KIND) catalogue of mediocrity. I'd take Celine over her - at least Celine has CAMP APPEAL.
But I still bump Million Dollar Bill - the best interpretation of a lyric Whitney's ever done! (I am completely serious, MDB >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> all her singles.)

Girl bye... Whitney>>>>>> Celine's one-dimensional voice with her one-dimensional catalog full of sappy MOR ballads.
We'll just have to take this in Stand Your Ground.

And she did it on purpose and it backfired. And since she's the black bitch she took all the blame while JT got away with it. Gotta love America SMH
Janet is miles more talented than Madonna.
Beyonce is miles more talented than any of them.
Yet Madonna and Gaga have a shot to being considered as greater than both Damita Jo and Gisele. SAD STUFF
