Thanks to Lawliet for the amazing graphics!
Idina Menzel. A household name to everyone at this point. She earned her place in Broadway history by starring in 3 of the biggest musicals of the past 3 decades (Rent, Wicked, Frozen), and her career shows no signs of stopping.
Kristin Chenoweth. She's not only a Tony winner, but a TV-star & Emmy winner for her role on the iconic Pushing Daisies. Inside that tiny body, Kristin packs a massive and golden set of pipes, as well as a brilliant wit that's not to be messed with.
Sutton Foster. As a young chorus girl, she got her big break when she was asked to step up and replace the lead actress in a show called Thoroughly Modern Millie. She ended up winning her first Tony for this role. A bona-fide triple-threat, she now stars in the popular TV-show Younger on TV Land.
Laura Benanti. An NJ girl, she made her Broadway debut fresh out of high-school in The Sound of Music, taking over the role of Maria at 19. She has been steadily working on both Broadway and TV (Law & Order, Nashville, Supergirl) ever since, earning her Tony as the title-character in Stephen Sondheim's Gypsy.
Kelli O'Hara. The Susan Lucci of Broadway. Since 2005, she has busted her buns on stage and earned 6 Tony noms before finally nabbing her first win in 2015. She is director Bartlett Sher's muse and a modern master of Rodgers and Hammerstein.
Jessie Mueller. The youngest girl on this list, she has had a meteoric rise on Broadway in the past few years. A vocal chameleon, she currently stars in Sara Bareilles' Waitress, a role she got when Sara saw her Tony-winning star turn in Beautiful: The Carol King Musical.
Audra McDonald. What is there to say about Audra? She has the most Tony Awards of any actor ever, with a record 6 Tonys. The only person close to this is Angela Lansbury with 5 Tonys. Audra is also the only person ever to win awards all 4 acting categories for the Tonys. Hell, I don't think any Oscar, Golden Globe, or Emmy winner has achieved such a feat. Audra is a legend, that is undebatable.
These are seven of Broadway's biggest and brightest leading ladies today. Together, they hold 13 Tony-Awards and 34 Tony-nominations.
