Australia: #1 Bieber; makes history on singles chart
Justin Bieber tops the ARIA Albums chart with 'Purpose'
Also holding for a fourth week behind Adele is Justin Bieber with “Sorry” (#1 streamed for a third week though), but he backs it up by debuting at No. 3 with a track written with Ed Sheeran and is lifted from his new album “Purpose” entitled “Love Yourself”, plus his first and former No. 1 single “What Do You Mean?” is back up two places to No. 7 this week, giving Justin three singles within the Top 10 this week, a first for him in Australia, plus by debuting at No. 3 it becomes his fifth Top 3 single in Australia, four of which occurred this year, more on Justin and his multiple entries later on.
In 2013 Justin Bieber released eleven tracks (one per week) from his album “The Journals”, but only three of those hit the Top 50, then in 2014 Taylor Swift managed to land 9 tracks from her album “1989” within the Top 100 at the same time, but this year Justin Bieber out-does Taylor and also himself, as eleven tracks from his new album “Purpose” are within the Top 100 at the moment. He has three songs within the Top 10 (as mentioned above), Tracks 3, 4 & 5 from the new album ‘Purpose’, whilst Track.2 “I’ll Show You” is at No. 20 this week. Debuting at No. 22 is track 9 “The Feeling”, and further down within the Top 50 is two further entries from the album, the title track “Purpose” (Track13) is new at No. 40 and “Mark My Words” (Track 1) comes in at No. 49, plus the albums very first release (also via the Skrillex & Diplo Jack U album) “Where Are U Now” (Track 11) is back up in at No. 50, meaning he has eight songs within the Top 50 this week. Lower down he also enters with “Children” (Track 12), “Company” (Track 6) and finally his teaming with Big Sean, “No Pressure” (Track 7), which gives him eleven Top 100 entries this week, the most by one artist since July 2009 when Michael Jackson’s passing landed 30 of his tracks on the chart at once, and the most for a living artist.
It was a big week of releases, but two acts battled for the top spot this week, One Direction and the eventual winner Justin Bieber with his fifth studio album “Purpose”, which becomes his third No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart.
“Purpose” is now the 601st No. 1 album for ARIA (1983 to 2015), plus the 397th to debut in the top spot and only the third for the Def Jam label. For this decade Justin now moves from equal twelfth to equal eighth on the list of ‘Accumulated Weeks at No. 1: 2010’s, Albums’ alongside Coldplay, Hilltop Hoods and Mumford & Sons who have all notched up four weeks this decade from multiple albums, although Justin is only the first to do it with three albums, the others all have had two. In the list of Canadian acts who have hit the top of the albums’ chart, Justin now is outright second for the most No. 1’s, behind Michael Buble and Celine Dion who both have five, now JB is second with three.
