We all know that Mariah has 18 #1 singles and many records to her name. No one except for the Beatles are even close to her in #1 singles. How could someone possibly score so many #1 hits, especially when considering that of her 27 Top 10 hits, almost 70% have gone #1? It almost seems that her hits either went #1 or weren't hits at all.
Examiner has an interesting thing to say on the matter...

Around the time of Mariah’s Glitter bomb, Roger Friedman – who would later become part of Mariah’s PR team – came out with this article that explained how Mariah scored number one hits in the 1990s: by releasing them for 49 cents while the regular price of a single was $1.99. At some outlets, singles actually sold for $2.99. At this time, Billboard’s charts were heavily measured by sales, which were more important than airplay at the time.
I honestly found all of this information to be very interesting. What are everybody's thoughts on Mariah's chart manipulation history?
Bye don't act like Mariah had any say in her career at that point and was even aware if that was happening. Have you never heard of a man called Tommy Mottolla?
Anyway even after that... she proved she can be successful on her own and without playing games like that.

This trend seemed to start with the single “Honey,” released in the Summer of 1997. Even though the song didn’t have high call-out research, it zoomed to number one based on sales. Mariah’s 1997 album, Butterfly, was selling far below the amount expected. It was eventually certified five times platinum based on overshipments: this number is far more than the actual amount the album sold.
Mariah’s chart manipulation continued with the “number one” single, “My All,” released in 1998. Several musical outlets sold the single for 49 cents while the song garnered mediocre call-out research and less than spectacular airplay.
In the Fall of 1999, Mariah released her Rainbow album and “Heartbreaker” single to bad reviews. “Heartbreaker” was stalling in airplay but became a huge example of chart manipulation. The song zoomed to number one as soon as it was discounted to 49 cents and 99 cents at many outlets. The follow-up single, the barely known “Thank God I Found You,” zoomed to number one based on the same manipulation.
All of what I quoted continued to happen after she divorced Mottolla though...
Lest we forget Sony actually took Mariah's singles off the shelves in 1991-1992 cuz they were selling so much it was affecting album sales singles queen
Let's not act like discounts aren't a thing all our faves do. I mean, your avi alone...
I just thought it'd be interesting for everyone to know. I mean let's all have this out in the open cuz some of ya'll act like MC is some God cuz of her records.
Has Rihanna ever discounted any single? Cause if so it would seem her number ones are more valid--but wait a lot of them are features! Which means Katy is the true Queen of #1s (don't @ me about the LFN remix/discount)
It's funny how this article focuses on "Loverboy", which was coincidentally blocked by "Bootylicious", which was intentionally marked down to 49 cents. but nah, these discounts is a Mariah (COLUMBIA) thing.
