Discussion: "Manufactured" Artists

During a brief discussion, a friend claimed Britney Spears was more "manufactured"
than Beyoncé. I disagreed. In your opinion, who are manufactured artists?
What does that entail? In your opinion, who is more manufactured
than who in the entertainment industry? Just wondering.

Perhaps. I'd argue some more than others.

The artists who receive the most creative royalties are likely the less manufactured, but they are all manufactured to some extent. It is just that some artists are clearly put together by their label (Rihanna, Katy) while some work in conjunction with their label (Gaga, Beyonce).

More often than not, those who write their own music, aren't as 'manufactured' as those who don't (i.e.: Gaga, Nicki, Adele, Ke$ha -she does write her stuff right?), because they can pretty much say whatever the hell they want in their music thus they form their own musical direction. However, I think we should be using the word 'manufactured' very loosely, because every artist has at least some control of their careers.

A manufactured artist is one who is created (often by major labels and big producers) as a direct and immediate result of a current popular trend/artist. They're basically created to cash in on what's hot right now.
Example: Ke$ha.

The truth.
You can't be POPULAR without being manufactured. The question is - who is complicit in their manufacturing, and who is not?

I strongly disagree. Ke$ha is in no musical sense correlated with Gaga.

The fact that you think Beyoncé is more manufactured than Britney shows you have no idea what the word even means.

I disagree. Adele is a popular fad right now. Would you say she is manufactured?

To an extent... Do you really think their labels will let them release whatever the hell they want? All of those girls (minus maybe Adele) will release pop commercial, easily marketable music because their label said so. And they will look and behave in a way that is marketable, because the label said so. I'm sure that if those artists had complete control of their own musical directions, their albums would sound much different than they do.

Well if you're with a major label, you're automatically "manufactured" b/c you have to answer to people above you and at least to a certain extent, do as you're told. It's a business above all else. That goes without saying.
