THE WEEKND, JUSTIN BIEBER SCORE NO. 1 DEBUTS
A pair of Canadian artists have huge debut weeks on the Canadian charts. The Weeknd scores his first number one album as “Beauty Behind The Madness” (Universal) debuts at No. 1 on the Top Albums chart with 35,000 units sold. His first two releases, 2012’s “Trilogy” and 2013’s “Kiss Land,” reached No. 5 and No. 2 respectively. He is the fifth Canadian artist to reach No. 1 in 2015, following Shawn Mendes, Yoan, Drake and Jean Leloup. That matches the total amount of chart-topping releases from Canadian artists in 2014. Seven songs from the album debut on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 this week, led by “Tell Your Friends” at No. 44. Along with “Can’t Feel My Face” and “The Hills,” he has a total of nine songs on the top 100 this week.
Replacing The Weeknd at the top of the Canadian Hot 100 is Justin Bieber’s “What Do You Mean” (Universal) which debuts at No. 1. It is the second chart-topper for Bieber and his first since “Boyfriend” debuted at the top in April 2012. It is the first song since Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” in August 2014 to enter the chart at No. 1. The song debuts at No. 1 on the Digital Songs chart, with 48,000 downloads sold. It is the biggest one week sales total for any song so far in 2015 and highest one week sales total for a first week release since Eminem’s “The Monster” sold 54,000 downloads in November 2013. The song also enters the Canadian Streaming Songs chart at No. 1, with 3.1 million streams. It is the first time a song has reached the three million total in one week since Nielsen began tracking streaming in Canada mid-2014.
Back on the Top Albums chart, another Canadian artist, Coeur De Pirate, debuts at No. 2, with 12,000 units sold of “Roses” (Grosse Boite).” It matches her highest chart peak to date, reached with her last album, 2014’s “Trauma.” It is also her second highest one week sales total to date.
Halsey’s first full length album, “Badlands” (Universal) debuts at No. 3 with 10,500 units sold. Her 2014 EP, “Room 93,” failed to chart.
Taylor Swift’s “Wildest Dreams” (Universal) vaults 79-10 on the Canadian Hot 100 and lands Greatest Gainer/Digital honours. The song leaps 67-6 with a 491% download increase.
Omi’s “Hula Hoop” (Sony) debuts at No. 50 on the Canadian Hot 100. It is the follow-up to “Cheerleader,” which spent 11 weeks at No. 1.
