I actually do keep a weekly Top 50 chart, and 2013 has been a great year on my chart! There has been plenty of competition, in fact 376 songs made the chart this calendar year. However, this countdown will review the Top 100 songs with a Bubbling Under section of 25 songs: a total of the 125 biggest songs this year for me! As a bonus, whenever a #1 song is eliminated, the following list will be updated to show when it was number one. Once the countdown is finished, I will have each week link to the Top 50 chart for that week! In addition this countdown will feature Flashback Tracks! In a final sendoff to 2013, I will have updates throughout the countdown of 13 songs that were huge hits for me prior to 2013.

So who ruled the charts this year? Did Rihanna Stay perched at #1? Did Britney Work Work her way to the top? Is Lady Gaga getting her Applause at the top of the list? Did Katy Perry Roar to new heights? Did Daft Punk Get Lucky with a megahit? Did Macklemore & Ryan Lewis go to the Thrift Shop so they could spend their money payolaing the Hot ZV charts? Tune in to find out!
A sick sample, and Eminem's solid rap skills made this easily one of the best tracks on MMLP2. It will actually rack up some more weeks in 2014, but it has already peaked.
This is another song that is still active on my chart so it'll garner some more weeks in 2014, but it has already peaked. It's a really nice song, I love the smooth ambiance of it all. The hook just flows from the verses so nicely and then into the chorus, it's a nice little musical journey.
This song was a total jam of mine back in 2003. Actually I listed to these guys through 2003 and 2005 a ton, they have a lot of good songs worth checking out.
Easily one of the better tracks on PRISM, Katy manages to pull off an oddly sincere vibe in this song. This is definitely a track that embodies the 'let the light in' theme of PRISM. It has already fallen off my chart, but it had a nice run.
This song might have a lower peak and a short amount of weeks, but those weeks were really strong. Even listening again now, this song is really great. The vocals just melt into the production, and the back-and-forth between the singers sounds wonderful. Cheesy love song in every way, but it just works.
Stromae really killed it this year, and this song is yet another total jam from him. Really when I listened to the album, this song came across as a bit basic; but it grew on me and the production really is a lot better than I initially gave it credit for.
If there's another artist who really killed it this year, it would be Bruno Mars. This is one of those Bruno tracks which probably has more of his personality bleeding through it than the usual lovely dovey "Marry Me" fair.
I honestly didn't think I was bopping to this as much as I apparently was for it to make this list. But definitely a bit of a guilty pleasure. The verses are just quirky enough to love, and the hook brings it all together.
This song smashed hard for me in early 2011. A great song with an amazing music video that manages to follow the song better than I would have ever expected. This song is one of the most fun things to sing along to ever.
Definitely kind of weak for a single that peaked so high. It fell pretty fast; I actually just started recharting it (it's initial run was a mere eight weeks) after year-end countdowns got me back into it some. Still, a solid lead single from Katy and I'm glad to see her smashing the charts with it still. Oh, and a certain other song might just be like 50+ songs higher, you know, another one that zoomed into the iTunes Top 5 that week....
Almost the exact same story as the prior song, only with the numbers changed slightly. Quick rise, quick fall; and just started recharting again with me revisiting it (initial run of only a mere seven weeks). Still, this song is a bop; just not the kind of bop that Justin Bieber was able to deliver in his prime.
This is one of those songs that you just hate loving. Or love hating. Or something. Sometimes I can't this song, other times it sounds like the most sincere-sounding song ever. A solid peak and some good longevity here.
Ark Music prodigy Alana Lee really showcases some great vocals on this track. Definitely not a track I expected to enjoy, but it's really good. Sounds like the kind of track they'd service to an American Idol winner for a coronation song.
Another artist who had a huge year on my chart in 2013 was Armin van Buuren. After putting out nothing but solid trance music for years, he released an album that absolutely blew me away. This was one of the standout tracks easily. It can be almost haunting at times.
The song is great, and the video is a perfect accompaniment for it. At first the instrumental comes off as jarring and bad, but it ended up growing on me and peaked high on my chart. It burnt out quickly though, the vocals could be better. But the lyrical content is what makes this song enjoyable anyway.
This is a really great song. The production is really awesome; however it ends up overpowering the vocals here, which was really great. I love the lyrics to this song, and it's definitely a good bop.
A very beautiful and powerful instrumental from Armin here. I really love the buildup and this song has a pinnacle that's worth reaching. This song is perfect on the album as well, exactly what you'd want for a reprise.
And here we have back-to-back instrumentals on my countdown. This song is really hot though, I absolutely love the one minute mark. The buildup preceding it does a great job getting you pumped, and then the meat of the song just keeps you jamming the whole way through.
This is an excellent, excellent cover by Darius here. His vocals are amazing, his talent really shows in this song. The song is of course a classic in and of itself, but this take on it really took it to a new level. I absolutely love what he does with the bridge here.
I originally found this song from when website Explosm was dragging this band to the bits for being terrible. And a lot of their criticisms of the band changing their image too much and coming across as too forced as true. A lot of their music sucks. But this song, which has a terribly bad music video; is actually amazing. Totally threw me off that one of their songs was this amazing, but it was and I've been jamming to it since 2007.
One of the biggest artists on my chart this year was Kacey. Her album is easily one of the best this year by far; amazingly strong lyrical talent with beautiful vocals. Really, what more could you want? This is easily one of the highlights from the album and would make an excellent single choice in my opinion. The song really should stand the test of time with its great message.
Peak: #1 (2 Weeks)
Weeks: 16 (5 of which were in 2012)
A huge victim of having her chart run split between two years, this song placed at #79 on my 2012 year-end chart. This song smashed right out the gate, with its two weeks at #1 being in 2012. It's biggest weeks were in that year, and then it proceeded to have steady longevity this year. Unfortunate timing chart-wise, but still a huge smash for me. I did not chart the will.i.am version when it came out, because we all know why.
Definitely a low peak, but it just happened that all of its ten weeks were stronger than usual despite said peak. As I said before, this was a huge year for Neon Trees thanks to their absolutely flawless album. Great vocals, jamming production. Really a bop here.
In a really peculiar twist, this song and the prior both tied in points for this year's countdown (this song won as peak is the first tie-breaker). And these two definitely had fairly different chart runs. Still, this song is amazingly powerful balled from Neon Trees. It's really very chilling and definitely captures the essence of having your trust violated by someone close to you.
Sadly 2DCC close out the year as the unlucky winner, with two songs close the Top 100 in the Bubbling Under section and no entries in the actual Top 100. Don't be fooled though, this is definitely a great song that I got my groove on to. The hook is great and I love the chorus. The bridge is absolutely stellar and the production stays pumping the whole way through.
And with that we have finished the prelude to the Hot ZV | 2013 countdown. January 1st will kick off the start to the listing of the songs that represent one of the best years in music for me personally. Thank you to all who have tuned in and I hope you enjoy it! If you don't know a song and it looks intriguing, please check it out! It's always good to explore new music and broaden your horizons; links to audio and snippet samples are provided to aide in just that!
The song with the lowest peak that will appear on this countdown. Really this song never smashed much for me, but I definitely like it and it had amazing longevity. I never liked "Home" which was probably why I was apprehensive to this single at first, but it's very good. He's definitely a great artist.
When I first heard this song, it sounded atrocious. However, it ended up getting stuck in my head and smashed pretty quickly after that. I absolutely love the verses and the way she sings them. The ending with her background chanting is absolutely amazing. However the repetitiveness of the song caused it to burn quickly; but it's still a surprisingly great song.
An absolutely beautiful country ballad here. This song just has a wonderfully mellow production, well-written meaningful lyrics, and terrific vocals that all go well together. It had a good chart peak and solid longevity.
An absolutely amazing alternative ballad here. In fact most of what I have to say about this song mirrors the song below it; and this song actually was smashing at the same time on my chart. It's mellow, beautifully written, and wonderful vocals that mesh well with the production. Another song I definitely love.
The weeks for this song might appear awfully low, but it's actually still charting and will get some good longevity in 2014, albeit probably not a new peak. The song's run has been good thus far though, and I actually really like this Britney track. The verses are terrific and the chorus has grown on me. It's probably the only song on her album I'd say meets the description of 'most personal' as well.
This song was actually #2 on my final chart of 2013. It's sadly going to be one of those songs that is huge for me but has its chart run split between years. This song has a wonderful folksy vibe and the production is absolutely magical. It's so wonderful, carefree, and sincere in the best of ways. The lyrics are endearing and very catchy. Really terrific song that I recommend checking out.
A song that most people are now familiar with now that it's finally smashing stateside. It's wonderful to see a song venturing into different lyrical territory while at the same time managing to be so oddly relatable on a universal level. The song did burn on me fairly fast far its peak though, but still a good song.
Definitely a song that should have been a bigger crossover smash than it was. This song is very pumping, and so, so catchy. Really it's a good face-paced song that keeps you going. Solid peak and longevity with some strong weeks helped it here.
Here's a song where it's peak really doesn't do it justice. It might not have peaked really high or even have lasted very long, but during the time it was charting, it was always close to its peak during its chart run. Hauntingly minimalist and beautiful, with simple yet elegant lyrics that pull at your heartstrings.
A song that is still charting and will have some solid longevity, but has already peaked at this point. The chorus is rather lacking while still catchy; but the verses are absolutely killer, especially with the 'nobody, nobody' hook. The bridge really tops it all off, and the production is fresh and original throughout.
Thank you for commenting collin! Thank you to everyone who has followed thus far and don't forget to check out the snippets! You never know when something will catch your ear. Tomorrow will be a flashback track. I hope you all have enjoyed things thus far and have a Happy New Year!
