Niall James Horan has an older brother called Greg, 23.Their parents divorced when he was five. He was a pupil at Coláiste Mhuire, a boys' Christian Brothers school. Horan has been playing guitar since childhood. In an interview he referred to his guitar as "the best present I ever received for Christmas". In 2010, he auditioned as solo candidate for the seventh series of The X Factor, performing "So Sick", receiving mixed comments from the judges present at his audition, with Louis Walsh in his favour. Two other judges voiced doubts about his abilities, with three votes out of four he was sent to boot camp. At boot camp he sang "Champagne Supernova", failing to qualify for the "Boys" category and was put in One Direction.
Zain Javadd "Zayn" Malik is from West Lane, Bradford, England. His audition was initially not broadcast, but was shown after the series ended on companion show The Xtra Factor. Malik auditioned singing "Let Me Love You". At bootcamp, he sang "Make You Feel My Love" before being rejected and put into One Direction. Malik was noted for becoming nervous in bootcamp, and when he was told he had to dance, he decided to remain backstage, effectively running the risk of elimination. Cowell noticed Malik missing from the dance routine and went backstage and convinced him to return. At bootcamp Malik failed to qualify for the "Boys" category and was put in One Direction. Malik has six tattoos, his grandfather's name in Arabic and the phrase "be true to who you are" written in Arabic, both on his chest, a Yin Yang sign on his left wrist, a Japanese symbol meaning "born lucky" on his stomach and a hand making peace sign on his right arm. He has gotten another tattoo of a heart, which covers the symbol on his stomach.
Liam James Payne born three weeks early to mother Karen and father Geoff, he has two older sisters, Ruth and Nicola. He described himself as a "naughty boy at school", at school he tried for teams, eventually trying out for the cross-country team, coming first "From then on I was training all the time and getting up at 6am to run for miles. At the age of 12 they put me in the school's under-18s team." Payne was bullied in school and took up boxing lessons. Payne had auditioned in 2008 to The X Factor's fifth series when he was 14 and reached judges' houses, however, Simon Cowell thought he was not ready for the competition and asked him to come back in two years. Payne came back and auditioned again singing "Cry Me a River", receiving a standing ovation from the audience and Simon Cowell. At bootcamp, he sang "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" before being rejected and put into One Direction. Regarding his one functional kidney Payne said, "I have to be careful not to drink too much, even water, and I have to keep myself as healthy as possible." Payne is currently in a relationship with dancer, Danielle Peazer. Payne, along with vocals, can also play the piano and guitar.

Harold Edward "Harry" Style has an older sister, Gemma, he was seven when their parents divorced; his mother later remarried to Robin Twist. As a child he loved singing, noting Elvis Presley as one of his influences. Styles was the lead singer for the band White Eskimo. He auditioned for The X Factor with "Isn't She Lovely", receiving positive comments from two of the three judges, with Louis Walsh having doubts on whether he was ready to progress in the competition. At bootcamp, he sang "Stop Crying Your Heart Out", before being rejected and put into One Direction. Styles briefly dated Caroline Flack, which caused widespread media controversy over their fifteen-year age gap. Styles also has a tattoo of a star on his left arm.
Louis William Tomlinson has five younger sisters: Charlotte, Félicité, Georgia, and twins Daisy and Phoebe; their parents separated in 2011. Daisy and Phoebe had roles as babies on a show called Fat Friends, he would go along and serve as an extra, after Fat Friends he attended an acting school in Barnsley. He starred in an ITV drama called If I Had You, and had a small part in Waterloo Road. He was a sixth form student at Hall Cross School, a state comprehensive school, and a former pupil of the Hayfield School. "What Makes You Beautiful" debuted at top the Irish Singles Chart of 15 September 2011; its B-side, "Na Na Na" also entered at #27. The single has lasted sixteen weeks in the top 50 chart. In the UK, "What Makes You Beautiful" received the most pre-orders for a Sony Music Entertainment single. It sold 82,000 copies in its first 2 days, a figure which rose to 100,000 by the 3rd day. The single entered the UK Singles Chart at #1 on 18 September 2011, shifting 153,965 copies that week—the highest first-week UK sales for any song in 2011 at the time. The single has spent a total of 20 weeks in the UK Singles Chart. "What Makes You Beautiful" was the #20 best-selling single of 2011, moving 540,000 copies.

Cosmopolitan's Sarah Kwong lauded the lyrics and instrumentation of "Gotta Be You" and its appeal to a more mature audience. "Gotta Be You" debuted at number three on the Irish Singles Charts, dated 17 November 2011. In the United Kingdom, "Gotta Be You" sold substantially less than their first single, selling 59,461 copies in its first week. Despite the single reaching number one on the mid-week chart update, it entered the official UK Singles Chart on 20 November 2011 at number three behind the seventh week sales of Rihanna's We Found Love and the release of Flo Rida's new single Good Feeling.

The single debuted at number twenty-eight on the UK Singles Chart dated 22 January 2012. In the singles week of release, "One Thing" became the highest climber of the week up seventeen places (26-9), peaking at number nine with 31,602 sales, becoming the third consecutive top ten hit single from One Direction's debut album. Robert Copsey of Digital Spy observed "More Than This" as a surprise, "their ability to carry off a sizeable ballad." Copsey lauded the "earworm" chorus, and summarised the song as "one of the best slowies to come out of boy band land in recent years". PopMatters's Zachary Houle noted "the acoustic guitar led" song for being "a bit cloying, and it doesn’t move the band much far beyond their '90s ancestors." Jason Lipshutz of Billboard opined that the synthesizers add "gravitas" to the chorus. Trash Lounge called the song a "fangirl-pleasing balladry at its best." Gordon Smart of The Sun acknowledged that the song is "almost" an indie song, and praised the high notes.

In a September 2012 interview with MTV News, Sheeran quipped that the song "is about the best things about someone, kind of like the things you wouldn't expect." He described "Little Things" as an "appreciation song," and concluded: "Seventeen-year-old Ed just wrote a lot of love songs, so expect to hear a lot of love songs on their album, I guess. In addition, the article reported that Syco Records was working on candidates that included Max Martin and Lundin, the producers behind Britney Spears' and the Backstreet Boys' biggest hits. Liam Payne explained that the song "holds a special place in our heart", and that it sets the lyrical tone for the album.
