Why? Europe combined is bigger than US market, and Japanese market is gaining on the US market for years now.
Europe is the biggest market as a continent, and Japan will be bigger than US soon, which means that labels will be getting most of their profit from markets outside of the US. Why would you only be here for the US?

But the U.S. is single-handedly bigger than those when separated. So U.S. stays winnin'.

Mexico with 0.03 million single sales before iTunes. I'm interested to see how much it rises.
22.1 million albums is not bad either.

If you want to count it that way then do, but it doesnt change the fact that Europe brings in more profit.

Why are you so concerned, though? The U.S. is the biggest market as you can see. Who's checkin' on the Japan market? While most U.S. artists sell worldwide, Japanese artists are limited to, well... selling in Japan. You cannot deny the U.S. market is the most relevant on top of it being the biggest.

My way of counting is the way of the sourced article, so I'd assume it's fair to do so.

US artists sell in Japan too, which makes a lot of revenue for the Japanese market.
For example, Avril Lavigne has outsold all of the Japanese acts this year in Japan. She has gone platinum in 6 weeks there. Outselling all Japanese acts. She is from Canada, yet the revenue from these sales in Japan will count towards the Japanese market.
It's not only Japanese acts that bring in the revenue there. So your point is invalid. Record labels will be LOOKING to get their artists into the Japanese industry if it makes them so much money. Fact is that the Japanese are buying into music more than most markets. The single sales in Japan are 43 million in profit, while the profit in US for single sales is 1.2 million.

Japan was always close to the US. Single sales have traditionally been way higher there while album sales have always been comparable. I can see Japan passing the US soon, thanks to her enormous digital market. Also, Japan is dropping way slower than the US.
As for Germany, she was expected to pass the UK. I think IFPI reported it in 2008 or 2009. I would say that's due to massive British sales for the top albums but very low sales for other releases. Also, both countries have relatively low digital sales compared to the US & Japan - same goes for France.
The tragic thing is that the entire top 10 is dropping. Some exceptions are South Korea, India and some other minor growing markets.
