Discussion: I noticed that when people mention THE pop GREATS...

on this board and other places. They almost never mention Janet. It's always MJ, Madonna, and Prince. Why is that? I really wanna know. As a Janet STAN, it kinda bothers me... just a tad.

Tbh I always assumed Janet was a flop until I started using this forum. Maybe she is more of a U.S thing?

1. The Super Bowl wrecked her legacy/legitimacy thereafter. Especially overseas.

2. She was never HUGE in Europe. She didn't do the numbers of the aforementioned three - or even Whitney or Mariah - in the 80s/90s. Truly, a whole generation (or two) don't know any of her music, and either don't know her or her music. If they know her, it's because of the Super Bowl or for being someone's baby sister.

I know, it sickens me too. But Janet was only number ONE in Black America.

It could be worse. You could be in love with the Queen of UK-AUS Pop who never gets any recognition anywhere.

I never knew how big Janet was before joining ATRL either. Was she local? I only knew a handful of her songs.

It's never Prince either, it's only Madonna and Michael or Mariah because this is a pop forum consisting of mostly caucasian members or European posters who probably didn't get as much Janet as they got Madonna in their household. The other reason is most of them are young and only reference Madonna because of the constant comparisons to Britney or Lady Gaga.

It's not just this forum. Madonna and MJ are up there with the Beatles and Elvis. The others are not.

I love Janet. She's a pop icon but her career doesn't match Madonna and there were times when Janet was overshadowed by her peers. Most people from this generation aren't that familiar with her older performances and if you ask them to name one, her Superbowl performance would come to mind first for obvious reasons.

I think she has a pretty strong discography and her video catalog is memeroable. Everyone knows Rhythm Nation, The pleasure principal, and Nasty boys. Even though she made a name for herself within the industry, she will always be looked at as Michael's little sister, who too tends to overshadow her career.

She's great though, she's inspired so many and paved the way for Britney, Beyonce, Mya, Ciara, etc. and she's still a damn good performer.

I'm pretty sure that impact etc. and sales Janet is a B-Lister while Madonna and MJ are A-Lister's. I still prefer Janet, but that may be one of the reasons.

Sis, throughout her peak - 86-01 - she was ALWAYS in a competition with Madonna/Whitney/Mariah for number one here. There was never any one WINNER of that battle.

Control slayed, but True Blue outsold it domestically and internationally (by a lot overseas).

She got four number ones off of Rhythm Nation, but did she get four number ones consecutively from her debut album? No. The one they call Mariah did.

Again was a huge hit and an Oscar nominated ballad - but it came off the heels of I Will Always Love You, did it not?

So, you see what I mean. And it's no shade cause I can't stand Whitney.

She wasn't local. She wasn't (and still isn't) as big as her brother W.W. but she def. wasn't local.

The only time I've seen that name is when someone called JB the Prince of Pop.
