'The Inheritors' perfectly showcases James Holden's musical habilities, and while I feel like this album may not be reaaaaaaaaally enjoyable as a whole, since it's quite long, there are really great tracks here, and overall the album has a really interesting structure.
Highlights: "Renata", "Gone Feral", "Seven Stars" // You'll Like It If You Like: Boards of Canada, Four Tet
I always loved Kelis, and I specially loved her latest album released in 2010, 'Flesh Tone', which is in my opinion the best EDM album EVER. So I was expecting something more in that vein, or in the vein of her stuff with Skream... I was slightly dissapointed, however her smooth vocals are still delivered, and we get some pretty songs after all, what more can I ask for?
Highlights: "Dreamer", "Runner", "Jerk Ribs" // You'll Like It If You Like: Her earlier stuff, Solange
Genre: Art Pop, Dance-Pop, Indietronica // Label: Sign of the Times // May 12th, 2014
Foxes delivered a really strong, cohesive Pop record, that is far from perfect, but it’s an enjoyable listen, specially for those who like Ellie Goulding or Lorde. We are facing a rising star, who may not have a giant hit with ‘Glorious’, but certainly in the future we’ll continue to talk about her.
Highlights: "Youth", "Shaking Heads", "White Coats" // You'll Like It If You Like: Ellie Goulding, Marina & the Diamonds // REVIEW
Genre: Art Pop, Synth Pop, Dream Pop // Label: Domino // February 24th, 2014
While less focused on typical "Indie Rock" music, Wild Beasts still know how to deliver excelent music. Maybe there isn't anything as big as the album's lead single, "Wanderlust", but if you like English Art Rock as much as modern Synth Pop, you'll really like 'Present Tense'.
Highlights: "Wanderlust", "Daughters", "Mecca" // You'll Like It If You Like: The Knife, Foals
Genre: Indietronica, Glitch Pop, Synth Pop // Label: Republic // February 18th, 2014
'Voices' is much more energetic than 'Eyelid Movies', the duo's debut full-length album, and it is a really polished release, full of extremely catchy hooks and melodies. I could say Phantogram have refined their sound, and I'm sure they will do it even better with their next album in the future.
Highlights: "Fall In Love", "Black Out Days", "My Only Friend" // You'll Like It If You Like: The xx, Goldfrapp // REVIEW
This album may not be perfect - I could do without the interludes (the shorter tracks), and the longer tracks sort of carry for way too long - but Nmesh is one of the most interesting Vaporwave projects so far, and I’m pretty sure 'Dream Sequins' is going to become one of the highlights of the genre.
Highlights: "If I Tell You That I'm Happy", "Climbing the Corporate Ladder", "Dream Sequins" // You'll Like It If You Like: Oneohtrix Point Never, Boards of Canada // REVIEW
Genre: Jungle, Hardcore Breaks, Dub Techno // Label: Modern Love // March 31th, 2014
Millie & Andrea is the project from Miles Whittaker a.k.a. Demdike Stare (Millie) and electronic musician Andy Stott (Andrea). They released a lot of EPs and 12”s in between 2008 and 2010 - but it wasn’t until this year where they would release their debut album as a group. 'Drop the Vowels' could as well be one of the craziest Dance music releases of the latest times - rejecting all the colorful textures of typical EDM for something darker, less accessible, but still fun… in it’s very own, extremely odd way.
Highlights: "Corrosive", "Back Down", "Temper Tantrum" // You'll Like It If You Like: DJ Rashad, TNGHT // REVIEW
Ok, yes - Canadian musician Tim Hecker is not new on the “dark and haunting yet beautiful ambient” thing. He’s literally been doing it for years. But, with every release, he gives this sound a different turn, and making it sound like something completely new, and 'Virgins' is no exception.
Highlights: “Prism”, “Virginal I”, “Arms, Drugs, Harmonium” // You'll Like It If You Like: Brian Eno, Fennesz // REVIEW
Genre: Glitch Hop, Wonky, Experimental Hip Hop // Label: self-released // July 23th, 2013
Venezuelan musician Alejandro Ghersi, better known by his stage name Arca, makes some incredibly insane, elastic, indescribable beats, which are all shown his debut mixtape '&&&&&', released after working with people like Kanye West ("Blood on the Leaves", "I'm In It") or FKA twigs (the entirety of 'EP2').
Highlights: “Fossil”, “Anaesthetic”, “Waste” // You'll Like It If You Like: Flying Lotus, FKA twigs
Genre: Noise Rock, Post-Hardcore, Hardcore Punk // Label: Captured Tracks // March 18th, 2014
Maybe ‘Say Yes to Love’ isn’t the most innovative noise rock/post-hardcore album out there, it can actually get a little derivative at times, but some of the “hate” that this album gets comes from people who actually like artists like Iceage, or Melt-Banana - quite hypocritical, if you ask me. This is a powerful yet vulnerable album, and despite how abrasive, aggressive and loud the album can get (and once you get past the fact of the band's name), it actually can be really wonderful.
I've heard good things about that Holden album and I liked the track that you listed. I can't wait to get it myself.
I thought Kelis was good, but just a little bit of a let down after Flesh Tone and I just can't get into Phantogram.
That Tim Hecker album is a thing of beauty though and thank you so much for introducing me to Arca, that track is amazing and I think I hear a Snoop Dogg sample from the Next Episode
90s Music, All You're Waiting For (everytime I see Nancy Whang, it makes me miss LCD Soundsystem though ), Still are all great. I also checked out that East India Youth track for the first time, I like it, kind of has a dark and wintry vibe.
Also, it's a small touch, but I really like how you put the record label for each track.
