How Can You Tell If A Song Has “Hit” Potential?
When you listen to a song, Pop or Rap, How Can You Tell If A Song Has “Hit” Potential? And are you always right or wrong?
I bet all my money that Anaconda and Fancy would flop, but boy was I wrong.
I thought John Doe by BOB would smash and I was wrong too
I knew The Monster and Timber would smash and I was dead on right.

It's all about the timing. I'm not 100% right, but I'm usually right on the money…

Timing? Like if you release
a "Summer" song but release it in the Winter?

It's not always right. Most people think that a catchy dance song will always be a hit but that's not always the case (C'mon, G.U.Y., Birthday, TIHWD etc.)
Most of the hits nowadays are hits that nobody would've thought they would be hits (All About That Bass, Royals, Fancy, All Of Me)

No…
Like, look at the styles and who is being popularized nowadays, judge from the new music popping up which appeals most to that style or that person. If something new comes along, judge by whether it's familiar to the popular style or if it's a drastic change. If it's familiar while the style is still big, then it won't make much of a dent, but if it's while it is budding, then there's a fair chance it will make a splash. If the style is a drastic change while the style is on its last legs, the new style becomes that… i.e.
Piano-ladened ballads 2013 = (popularized by) Rihanna - "Stay", (continued by) Bruno Mars - "When I Was Your Man", (falling by) P!nk & Nate Ruess - "Just Give Me A Reason)
(killed by) funk/dance music 2013 = (popularized by) Robin Thicke - "Blurred Lines", (continued by) Daft Punk - "Get Lucky", (falling by) Justin Timberlake - "Take Back the Night"
(killed by) white-girl hip-hop 2013 = (popularized by) Miley Cyrus "We Can't Stop", (continued by) Katy Perry - "Roar", (falling by) Lorde - "Royals"
And the patterns continue… if you know or have a rough feeling about what's going to be the next big style in music, you can pretty much predict any song to smash or not…

Usually something being familiar but different enough is a good indicator. Relatability also helps.
That's why a lot of these quick lil' Dance singles always flop. It's just more of the same and very forgettable.

Oooooh I get it! Great point! So right now in Hip Hop, it's all about the simple DJ Mustard beat. I wonder what's next.

This x100!!!! I always think a catchy dance pop song with automatically be a hit and the ballads will flop.

Im really bad with predicting which songs will be hits or not when they are first released.
I thought anaconda would flop, and as a nicki stan there is no denying that the video helped the song breakout.
I thought Birthday was going to be #1 for weeks.

Kinda. It's more on the subject: "woman-empowerment with nostalgic feeling". "Anaconda", then "Shake It Off", and "All About That Bass". We should be due time for a change soon…

Just Give Me A Reason isnt a piano laden ballad, its a twist on We Are Young, and the trend was popularized from Someone Like You. I really dont agree with the rest of the statement anyways but I just feel the need to point that out.

A trend this year is throwback songs like Problem, Bang Bang, All About That Bass.
I would love to see rock-inspired music coming into Pop, which would pave the way for rock returning just like Gaga's pop/dance-pop music paved the way for dance music coming into full motion and into the mainstream.
