I'm just going to quote what I posted in another thread:

I just can't grasp how someone could identify with a religion that has so many intolerant people -- they're lumping themselves in with them, and associating themselves with them. It's like joining the Tea Party (are they even around anymore?) because you agree with their fiscal ideas, yet you disagree with their social ideas. It doesn't really make much sense to me, and it also doesn't make you look very good.
I also don't understand how people can identify with a religion (mostly Abrahamic religions), and still be "tolerant," because they've rejected their religion's main texts (which very clearly do not favor gay people). I just don't get it.
But maybe I don't fully understand. And I guess it's none of my business, anyway. People have a right to believe whatever the **** they want to believe, and to many extents, to do whatever the **** they want to do.
The scriptures and texts used by Christianity are hateful. There is absolutely no going around that. If you identify as Christian, you associate yourselves with those texts, even if you don't believe in them. But I don't know why you'd practice a religion when you don't believe in half of its scriptures, anyway.
Again, it's none of my business. Believe whatever you want to believe. Just don't force your beliefs down my throat, and I won't force mine down yours.
Doesn't exist. Or shouldn't exist, rather. Christianity is a hateful religion. Anybody who says otherwise hasn't read the bible or is blatantly picking and choosing what to believe in.
The same is true for just about every religion, sans Buddhism and a few others.

I agree completely. Even if I believed in Jesus and the rest of it, I wouldn't want to call myself a Christian because it's clumping yourself under a label. Even if you are liberal, identifying as a Christian implies otherwise.
y'know, the scriptures that condemn homosexuals and shellfish eaters to fiery brimstone? Or the scriptures that talk about murdering people and pillaging villages if they're not Christians, or the scriptures that talk about women being forced to marry their rapists?
Parts of TBN show how organized religion can be used as a racket to wring money from exploitable faith-hungry people.
The fact that there is such a range in "Christian" beliefs show how divided the Church actually is. No one can agree on anything but they are supposed to be a united representation of Jesus in the world.
The various passages that talk about how being gay is bad.
The various passages that talk about how women are essentially worthless and/or property.
The various passages that talk about stoning people to death if they get divorced, or eat pork, or wearing clothes of mixed fabrics.
...And that's barely scratching the surface. Christianity is a religion that revolves around intolerance. That is not an opinion; it is clearly stated in its scriptures.

Ritual and sexual purity in the Old Testament is a whole trip, that we can't even begin to comprehend. These were people who were walking with the living God in the middle of a desert, it's a whole different context than ours.
Saying homosexuality is wrong and that homosexuality will take you to hell isn't the same as being hateful.
Again, the genocides are in the Old Testament, before Christianity, and weren't random/senseless genocides. They were God ordained and served a divine purpose.

Saying homosexuality is wrong is hateful? How so?
What passages talk about women being worthless or property? The main passage I recall talking about womanhood encourages women to go out, work, buy property, be independent and successful, being praised by her family and community.
I agree that Christianity is not all inclusive. There's no compromise. You're either in or out.

So the pillaging of non-Christian villages was organized by the Holy Father himself and completely justifiable... because they served a divine ******** purpose?

Because it's not wrong, lol. It's just completely ignorant. There is nothing wrong with homosexuality.
Women are property in the bible:
Quote:
If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.
(Deuteronomy 22:28-29 NLT)
Okay, then. I hope you don't eat shellfish/pork, shave the hair on your temples, etc. Otherwise you're a hypocrite. In or out, correct?

As you're defending biblical texts as "not hateful," I hope you don't mind if I take a counter argument.
Why would God preach about caring and loving others and then deliberately wipe out an entire population just because they didn't believe in him? If that were the case then everyone on "His" earth would be Christian now.
I believe that there is good and bad in every religion. You just need to find the right person.
I actually love her, she's amazing, I'm doing a position paper about her. Religion VS. Individuals
This. While there are some Christians who are intolerant and choose to use the Bible as a weapon, others hold Jesus' teachings close to their own hearts and genuinely practice respect and love. It's just that the good ones aren't the attention-*****s that get headlines.
And intolerance of any kind is bad. It's not fair to object to being labelled by others and then go around and try to label everyone of a certain characteristic of any kind.

This is my thing. I believe in God and that is it. I don't believe in Christianity and I don't believe in the Bible. All I believe is God. I feel like you don't need a herd of people, a church, or a book to show your love for a higher being. But Christians tend to be full of ****. The same ones telling you that you're going to hell are the same ones who are probably divorced (that's a "sin" according to your religion too buddy!).
From my experience, Christians tend to be hypocrites and very judgmental. The most common sin that I hear of is that homosexuality is a sin. But so is a lot of other things in the bible but they don't speak of that. Why is it that we always hear about homosexuality being a sin but with the divorce rate so high in America we hear nothing about divorce being a sin? I feel like Christians (at least from my experience) are a joke. It's like seeing a group of kids doing something wrong and only calling out one kid out of that group for doing something wrong. Maybe I wouldn't view Christianity as a joke if they were more consistent and weren't blatantly bias.
I love God and that is enough. I don't need all that extra baggage that comes with it. You can keep your herd of people, your church, your bible. God is enough for me.

The problem is that Christianity is not a tolerant religion. I understand that there are compassionate and respectful Christians, but they aren't really following the laws of the Bible. Christianity is riddled with discrepancies and hypocrisies. Jesus may love everybody, but God surely doesn't.

All of this I don't think it's fair that when I'd like to share my opinion that because i'm a Christian i'll be labeled as intolerant or hateful just because I believe in a God. Not everyone follows the same teachings and that goes for ALL religious/non-religious people. Jesus's message is enough for me and that's just my belief.
