1D 470k; Biebs 620k: biggest SPS number ever
THIS CHART STORY HAS PURPOSE
Def Jam’s Justin Bieber is this week’s sales champ, prevailing over SYCO/Columbia’s One Direction, as his Purpose tops the HITS Album Sales Chart with 504k and the Sales Plus Streaming (SPS) Chart with 620k. FYI, those numbers signify the biggest debut of 2015 (in both categories)—until next week—as well as the biggest sales-plus-streaming number ever.
1D landed at #2 with 414k in sales and 470k at SPS.
Justin Bieber vs. One Direction: Neck-in-Neck for No. 1, But Will Digital Sales Tip the Scales?
As of press time, Purpose, released by Def Jam, is projected to reach 450,000 units in sales with another 100,000 in TEA (or track-*equivalent albums, whereby 10 individual downloads of songs from an album equal one album unit) and SEA (or stream-equivalent albums, whereby 1,500 streams equal one album) anticipated for a total of 550,000 units. Meanwhile, One Direction's Made in the A.M. is expected to scan about 425,000, with potentially another 50,000 consumption-equivalent units for a total of 475,000.
As for traditional retailers, Target offered *customers five different One Direction album covers. As a result of that *marketing tactic, Made in the A.M. outsold Purpose (81,000 to 28,000 units) in sales gathered over Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the discount chain. 1D and Bieber were neck and neck at Walmart, where Bieber sold 22,000 units to the band's 19,000.
At iTunes, Bieber scanned 270,000 units during the weekend, versus 190,000 One Direction downloads. A week earlier, 1D was in the lead, with 170,000 in preorders during a six-week availability period, while Bieber had 110,000 in a three-week period. Usually, artists with shorter preorder windows have a bigger lift during the debut week, but the one experienced by Bieber is greater than anticipated.
TOP 15: IT'S NOT CLOSE. IT'S OVER.
Justin Bieber Will Score a Decisive Win This Week
Justin Bieber will score a decisive win over One Direction on this week’s album and SPS charts. The Bieber-1D face-off also marks the first time two albums have debuted over 400k in the same week since 2007, when Kanye West and 50 Cent squared off. Meanwhile, as many as nine debuts may land in the Top 15 this week, with Def Jam leading—not only at #1 but with three other new entries, two of them looking set to land in the Top 5. Here’s how it looks at midweek.

I think Bieber's #s will go up, and 1D's will stay roughly the same.

"Sorry" will put him ahead since it should generate more streams, sales & pre-orders than any 1D's single

I know Biebs is going up, he's having nothing but more acclaim by GP this era with each single (he's really getting better and better)
Hope the pure sales difference is small, 'cause Bieber is going to slay TEA/SEA

I was hoping Justin would win. He put out the better music, better videos and better performances. I don't get 1D's appeal.

Bieber's music has been better this era so he deserves the 1 anyway, his comeback era feels bigger that 1D's, Where Are You Now alone>>>>
