Next year Gaga and Britney will released a new album. There's no doubt both albums will be AMAZING, but, which artist will rule the 2011 year? Gaga or Britney?
Britney has already proven herself with 1M+ and 500k+ debuts, she's been around for over a decade (eek, I sound like Christina), I don't think Gaga can compete with that.
Unless of course she brings an album full of Poker Faces and Bad Romances, and videos that are Paparazzi/Bad Romance level, but what are the odds of that?

I'd actually say Gaga stands a pretty good chance of having HUGE opening numbers
Gaga currently has more buzz, more industry respect, more critical respect, and more approval from the public in general. I expect her to have another smash era.
I'm not writing Britney off. I expect this new era to be successful, and I am hopeful that she will produce some of the best music and biggest hits of her career. She reigned over the pop domain for a long time, and she's still one of the most important pop stars of our time, but the torch inevitably passes from one superstar to another. Gaga will hold it for a few years until it passes onto someone else who has proven themselves worthy.

In 2008 most people didn't know who Gaga was. During Christmas break I was asking people "what do you think of Lady Gaga?" and no one had heard of her. She didn't hit her stride until 2009.
In terms of sales, awards, and relevancy I'd put my money on Gaga. Obviously it's a silly question though because both will be hugely successful and sell a ton of records.
