I find the album to be very sad; Starring Role, Teen Idle, and Valley of the Dolls are all quite explicitly sad IMO, and Lies, Homewrecker, Living Dead, and Fear And Loathing are all quite melancholy.
Even the most upbeat song (Bubblegum Bitch) is sort of a negative song! But to each their own
IMO all songs should be interpreted subjectively.
