Last year's #1: B.o.B f/ Hayley Williams, "Airplanes"
Who would enable a peace-loving and kind-hearted person like me to mark a song about a shopping mall shootout incident as 2011's song of the year? Only Foster the People.
But just like a lot of the other ATRLers, I did not care much about them and their breakout single at first. It was just for me a typical indie track that I thought will surely drown in the ocean of mainstream music. Not until I looked at the alternative charts and saw this skyrocketing to the top 5 and even peaking at #1. I gave it another listen and right then and there, I found myself head-bobbing and even whistling along to it's insanely catchy tune.
What makes "Pumped Up Kicks" a million times more interesting is that behind it's fun and light beat comes a violent theme that got me totally curious. I did actually spent a whole night researching about the real score behind it's lyrics up to the point of actually reading Robert Hawkins' suicide note (which was really scary to do).
FTP is definitely a box of fun things I dont even know what, and they've come for Panic! at the Disco's weave this year. Hoping for more FTP presence in 2012!
That concludes my Best of 2011! See you next year!
Foster the People beating Panic! at the Disco on your list is amazing! This truly is a great song and I'm glad it's #1 here. I hope we get to hear more material from them and other bands that showcase this sound next year.
