Her dark songs absolutely destroy her light/fluffy ones.

I hate to rain on everyone's parade on that discussion, but her love for BTW still and the fact she's working with Garibay again makes me feel like she's not going to suddenly go commercial.
(By the way, I'm not saying you were claiming that, just a general response to the debate.)

There's nothing wrong with going commercial. Gaga going commercial never meant making music like Katy Perry or Rihanna. The highlights from The Fame were always more than that.
Born This Way was excellent, IMO. It's her best work and it added a lot of new music to the palette. Hopefully she can really trim back and find a few really catchy new things to bring to dance pop for her next album.

One thing we can all agree on is the amount of promotion and push Gaga put behind this album is incredible.
She really worked hard this year, and I hope she has a hell of a lot of champagne after she wraps up her performance on NYE.

There are two things about this era that absolutely let me know that there are some serious problems:
Her digital power. Everything about it. The reception of her videos is by far the scariest. I've beaten this to death, but it's incredibly scary that she can't garner more views than an Avril Lavigne video for a song that peaked at #99 in the US and charted almost nowhere in the world with any of her last 3 videos.
The performance of The Edge of Glory. Something here went absolutely, TERRIBLY wrong. I have no doubt that the music video and terrible American Idol performance contributed, but that song should have been a 5M seller in the US. It's completely feel good, universal, catchy unoffensive and endearing. It had all of the momentum in the world. It was a critical darling and got praise from everywhere, had an incredible debut, showed HUGE increases each time a commercial featuring it was aired on TV and in the radio world, DJs thought it would be her biggest hit before it was released as a single. The fact that it has barely topped 2M in sales in the United States is one of the scariest things that has happened all era for me.

The edge of glory makes me so sad

I don't think there's anything wrong with it either, but I wouldn't bank on her deciding to go commercial.
She hasn't really indicated one way or another. I'm not sure why fans keep saying "for the next album, when she's less experimental..." etc.

I don't really think she's going to base the entire album on that. I see no problem for her having a few moments of self-indulgence with her biggest obsession.
Also, I think that her next album will be more commercial than BTW, but it's not going to be anything like TF.
I'm hoping it's going to be similar to TFM in that it has a more polished sound, and that it's catchy music with a different sound.

I think the Edge of Glory video ****ed up its sales a quite a bit, it's not even at 50m views thanks to her dancing on stairs for no reason.
That big mess up still bothers me. I'm surprised she would ever allow herself to release such a poorly put together clip, especially with such great vids coming out from the same era. (BTW/Judas/MTN were all great in my opinion.)

I'm not sure experimental is even the right word for Born This Way. The Fame Monster and Born This Way both experiment with much more diverse sonic palettes, but Born This Way is much more all-in when it comes to how heavily she layered the songs. The only song off of The Fame Monster that comes close to Born This Way's sonic density is Dance In the Dark (and Bad Romance).
So Happy I Could Die and Dance In The Dark really foreshadowed the sounds of Born This Way somehow, without even really treading too heavily on the 80s or rock 'n' roll.

I think that since Jeff said that it was going to be more TFM music in the next album that the assumption is that it's going to be less experimental and more commercial (myself included).

Why do people keep comparing these new artists to Gaga?
It's not easy to be as big as her.
