The only ones I approve of are the ones that don't have the boxes and dividers around them.. and especially not a million of them with only one small part moving and the rest not.
For Example, Mr.Link's (since he posted here and his avatar is great)is great, and is similar except it's only in two parts and not 50382.
No no they are not tacky. They show skill and craftsmanship. Those boring gifs and static images are just lazy. I'm not saying we need to go back to exactly that style, but why do we put 0 effort into our avatars these days?

I put lots of effort into merging my two images together It's just not a gif.
