at this Sharapova interview from two days back
Q. You seemed pretty emotionally engaged. You fist pump every match, but today they were a little stronger.
MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, I was really ready today. I really was. I knew it was going to be tough. I didn't underestimate her level of play. I knew it was going to be a very tough match and I need to be ready for it.
Also the crowd got me better. In the second set, someone yelled, "Martina, she's getting tired." That kind of pumped me up a little bit. I hit two winners in a row. I looked back at them, and I'm like, tired, my butt. So don't mess with a truck. You're going to become a pancake.

Mauresmo better not win this tournament, as I feel that she isn't earning her worth. Henin-Hardenne, Clijsters, and Hingis are out, combined with the fact that Davenport, Pierce, and neither of the Williams sisters opted to play means that Mauresmo's only competition comes from Sharapova, Dementieva, and Petrova (who beat her just recently or else I wouldn't even mention her). Not to say that Mauresmo is a bad player, but I just feel that she has gotten quite lucky in her recent success (can you say three people retire against her in the Australian Open, defaulting her the title...people she would normally lose to otherwise).

Mauresmo is currently the best player in the world. If she wins the tournament, she deserves it.
Dementieva didn't lose, she beat Krajicek 6-0, 6-1!

Maybe cos it's not the norm for her to be winning so easily. They got flustered.

lol, Kworb, I wasn't saying that she was bad in the least, I just feel that the #1 title was a bit...handed to her. She has always lacked the confidence needed to win a big one and was just plain outright lucky at the Australian Open.

It's not her fault all the other players are destroying their bodies with all the weight training and exhausting playing styles. Her Australian Open win wasn't a fluke.

lol, I'll give you that. Mauresmo is one to know about destroying her body, as she's done that sooo many times in the past, so I guess she now knows how to stay healthy. Fluke...? Still not sure about that, but she was bound to win one eventually I guess.

Only winning one grand slam title, doesn't necessarily equal a fluke. Some were underachieved like Sabatini, Martinez, Novotna and I think Mauresmo belongs there if she only wins one. So calling it a fluke doesn't make sense to me.
Anyways, I think she did deserve the title, but those 4 injuries, 3 retirements didn't help her case at all.

lol, Alexa has a point. Clijsters would be underachieved too if she retires as the end of next year without another grand slam. Also, I happen to think that Davenport should have at least one more, as she has come sooo close sooo many times.

*revives*
Martina finally wins her first title in Rome after her comeback, beating Venus on her way there.
Good luck in RG, Marti!
