Gaga is the present and the future...

I think they are maintaining the current pop landscape rather than progressing it into the future. I def love Rihanna a lot more than Katy...but I think both of them are more of-the-moment-in-pop type of girls rather than longterm future of pop type of stars.

But you never know the direction an entertainer can take their music, so we will just have to wait and see!

Agree, Rihanna and Katy are the most relevant pop girls at the moment. They will be the two most successful females for the next 3 years. I predict they will start outselling Gaga, album-wise and single-wise.

Katy outsells Gaga single-wise already, and I'm pretty sure Rihanna does too.

Music goes in cycles and as far this electro-chick pop girl typhoon goes, there will be a backlash. I'll stop short of saying I can guarantee that, because there's exceptions to every rule, but let's look at the history (below). The real question of these girls' staying power will be how they react music-wise and the success of their reaction in the general public (stan-bases don't count) once this backlash does decide to show up, IMO. An argument could perhaps be made for their malleability with Rihanna doing urban then straight-up dance and Katy doing pop-rock then dance-pop, but I'll leave that to you to argue.

The hard-rock of the 80s was a reaction against the disco backlash, then enough people missed disco so it came back but modified with a sort of rock edge and you had dance-pop's golden years of Madonna and Michael. Grunge followed as a reaction against dance-pop in the early 90s, then Brit-pop was a reaction against grunge, then came the teen pop era from roughly '94-2003 as it's reaction. Hip-hop domination followed in the mid 2000s as a reaction against teen-pop. Rihanna came into the picture right when urban was transitioning to dance music in popularity, and her early catalog reflects just that - dancehall and urban-inflected pop. Then dance music came back to the States as a reaction against hip-hop's domination, and Katy came into the picture when the dance-pop trend was really hitting its stride. I'm predicting the backlash against the ballsy electro-chick trend around 2013/2014 (IMO). Again - as far as what that entails, how Katy or Rihanna react to it, and whether their reactions are successful....well we'll have to wait and see. Who knows...I may end being completely wrong.

Rihanna and Katy are to Gaga what Paula Abdul was to Madonna I love Rihanna but no.

And Gaga hasn't done anything from the past?! Haha! Almost all of her music is inspired by past artists or decades. She may of pioneered the modern-day electro/dance-pop trend, but she certainly didn't create it. I do agree with you on Adele though.

I mean, who's really progressing anything though? As much as I love '4', I don't see any other Pop girl doing the sound she did on that album. The same can be said with 'Born This Way' as well. Yes, they took a different route, but I don't think their respective albums are "sounds of the future" to be quite honest.

RIhanna has 4 grammies and will have more this year.
