Mr. Know It All was the right choice for a lead single IMO. It's not the typical pop/rock that she's become known for, and it got people buzzing about it because of that. The easy thing would be to have released Einstein or Let Me Down, but ANY singe she releases after MKIA will inevitably be stronger material. You have to give people a reason to get interested. MKIA did that. Now she can grow further interest on the strength of her follow up singles.
Look at Katy Perry...Teenage Dream, Last Friday Night and E.T. were MUCH stronger singles than California Gurls, but CG is what got people into the album and got them to check out her other material.
