I'm not talking about her becoming the new Robyn. I'm talking about her selling maybe 10m albums rather than 13...or 8 rather than 11. You know still shitloads but not as much. Madonna took a big drop with Like a prayer then Erotica...but she was still selling loads and making a difference socially. It's risks that make you an icon. Who the hells going to give a flying foo about Katy's number 1's record in 20 years? I remember when Westlife broke the Beatles record a while back...it was made out to be a big thing but no one cares now. These records mean nothing long term when you don't have the back catalogue and artistic depth to back them up.

Stefani went from raw, heartfelt ballads to uptempo, auto tuned electro-pop songs in the form of Gaga. That is the definition of shamefully selling out.

Like I said, I respect the fact that she writes about whatever the hell she wants, but that doesn't automatically make her a better artist.

A chunk of Born This Way, is utter shite. If this chunk was replaced with a few songs in the vein of Just Dance, Bad Romance then the quality of the album wouldn't necessarily be improved, but it would be more commercially appealing - and as a pop star, there is nothing wrong with that.

There are some important points in this post. Like A Prayer and Erotica had very similar effects (and much less relative success) to Born This Way. In fact, they were largely panned by critics at the time, too. But it's that controversial material that pissed consumers and many critics at the time that ultimately survived the test of time and is seen as her best work.

She's selling this year b/c she's following TF + TFM. It does speak to the strength of her starpower that she can, so I'm not belittling the accomplishment: Rhianna followed the huge GGGB era with Rated R and despite what her fans say, it's commercial (jut a little dark) and she struggled to hit 3M despite a holiday release. But Rihanna's people keep her balanced and make her record hugely commercial songs (and in the case of Loud, albums) as backup when she takes a risk. Next era, Gaga won't have the luxury of following TF + TFM and the album will have to sell on its own strengths.

I despise 90% of pop music, it's not my thing. The only thing I'm here for in that field is Gaga.

I know. It seems gaga has some fans that only like her when she's a SUPER SUPERSTAR rather than the SUPERSTAR she is now. Some people are never happy.

If a song has a big chorus it is pop.
