I've had much experience with addiction, both in my family and personally. It's a gross, ugly thing to lose control of your life. Support from others helps, but if you've lost the will for yourself it often isn't enough. It may ultimately be selfish, but for you to have gotten to that point mentally you're basically a slave to the drug and no longer yourself.
No, it isn't shocking, but I am very sympathetic to her, and the fact that I am sympathetic doesn't preclude me from having sympathy toward others who had no agency in their own death at the same time. Not mutually exclusive, there isn't some limited well.
