Belle is 6 years old in the photo, and she's 83 now, which means the photo was probably taken in 1934. On August 3, 1934, Hitler became the supreme ruler of Germany (and remember the first "images of Belle" photo was Germany.png). Perhaps the original photo will reveal Belle to be a former Hitler Youth, and we'll be challenged not to judge her for it (not to cast the first stone, as it were)... The umbrella, I suppose, could be a symbol for willful ignorance, protection from uncomfortable knowledge. "Retraction" could refer to closing up the umbrella and accepting uncomfortable knowledge.
