Checkmate,
Isn't that the exact point I'm trying to make!? If we're going by the definition I provided for Avan-garde, wouldn't Born This Way fall in the category by doing precisely what a "pop song ins't suppose to be about"? By putting such a huge emphasis on the lyrical content and being so direct with it instead of filling it up with metaphors, wouldn't that already be pushing the envelope? Because its "pop music".
But I do agree sonically it isn't too forward. But nonetheless still very different than whats filled pop radio(Dr Luke)

Well yeah. But with pop you can't really be different because it's just whatever is popular. With rock, you have certain elements that make it a rock song, same with reggae, dance, R&B, etc. But with pop, it can be any genre as long as it appeals to the majority of people.
|
I see. It's cruel, sometimes you have to let yourself go with the flow to deal with the market pressure.
But once you come up with something different and appealing... you've reached the point.

So no one's going to respond to ohplease's respectful view on things... or will we continue to throw shade causing this thread to reach a thousand pages?

I agree with that part. She revived the avant-garde fashion and music videos to the mainstream pop audience since it is her main marketing strategy, especially in the US. However, she wasnt the one who reintroduced it to the market. Rihanna, Beyoncé & Ciara did. "Disturbia", "Go Girl" videos deserve more artistic respect, they were innovative. Beyoncé for example was wearing avant-garde clothing by Gareth Pugh in 2008 for her MTV EMA performance and in "Diva" because it was hot and new. She wore him again in "Run The World". They started working with Thierry Mugler early in 2008, and he is very avant-garde and futuristic. But that avant-garde image happened to be the image that worked for Gaga, so she capitalized it to the extreme while the other ladies where experimenting it only. She influenced mainstream artists to not be afraid to take more risks generally, I give her that. But I don't believe that she made anything trendy. Fashion brings the trends, not Gaga. Artists follow the evolution of fashion and wear what's hot & new. This is why they were all rocking for example shoulder pads [Beyoncé's leotard in ''Single Ladies" for example] or geometric forms, it was a fashion trend. The only one I can see who tries hard to have a similar image as Gaga is Nicki Minaj. Musically speaking, she isn't avant-garde. If we really want to go to the roots, we don't have to go that far. Kelis by far beats artistically & creatively all of them, she is so avant-garde that it has never helped her rising as mainstream. She is true to herself and this is not an image, this is who she is. Her music, her fashion. Gwen Stefani was a prime example of avant-garde. Kylie Minogue had her moments. Beyond pop, Missy Elliott & Busta Rhymes were extremely avant-garde in Hip-Hop. The Neptunes musically, Destiny's Child's "The Writings On The Wall" & "Survivor" albums had some avant-garde in them. Even "Umbrella" was very innovative and it's not that far away. I can talk about TLC's "No Scrubs" video, some MJ videos, Bjork, Patti Labelle & Labelle, Cindi Lauper, Madonna and of course, the iconic Grace Jones. They were original and being themselves and deserve credits.

That's like when people said Alejandro and La Isla Bonita sounded alike.
I'm not saying Gaga has never copied our Madgesty in any way (because I'm not delusional) but come on.

|
BTW doesn't really sound like EY to me.
No more than certain Britney, Ke$ha and Katy songs that sound almost interchangeable.
The Alejandro video is a much more criminal example of Madonna plagiarism IMO.
But it's "in" right now for the media to compare Gaga to Madonna. It's an easy comparison.
Just like it's "in" for very reputable media sources to say Beyonce, Katy, Rihanna, Ke$ha, Christina, Miley, Natalia are all influenced by Gaga.

No I meant that maybe lyrically it's forward and innovative but sonically it isn't and that's what matters unless you're into rap or some ****..
