I was at Church this week and the priest said..."It doesn't matter if you're rich or poor, black or white, gay or straight...."

So he preached against what the Bible (ie, the very foundation of the church where you were) says?

He preached it and still has his job.
I was surprised because it was a Catholic Church. It was my first time going to that church (my friend is the one who normally goes there) ,but everyone was so welcoming & accepting of everyone's differences. That is how things should be and how God intended things to be.
No one chooses to be gay, Tracy.

There is written nowhere in the Bibble that being gay is a bad thing. God destroyed Sodom and Gomor (don't know how you write it in english) because people were having orgies and have random sex with everybody and anybody even when they were married. People just ran with it and assumed it was because they were having homosexual sex.

Actually, despite the popular beliefs of current Christianity in the world and organized religion, it is NOT what the Bible says.
Unfortunately, most Christians don't tend to really study the Bible and it's original translations. The word wasn't originally written in English, it was translated over to our language so that it could be read and practiced by people who spoke English.
HOWEVER, naturally, words got lost in the translation and things were slightly edited and interpreted differently than the Bible's original version [hence the many, many different versions released of the Bible in English].
This happens in religion because people who practice what the Bible says FAIL to study it and actually discover the true meanings of the context of the literature. Most just preach what the preacher says instead of actually reading the Bible themselves and studying it.
This is called Biblical Literalism.
Those who quote the scripture to justify their animosity are guilty not just of intolerance, but also of selective piety, an inability to understand historical context and poor reading comprehension.
I'm going to post some quotes from a review on the documentary, For the Bible Tells Me So, that many people here as well as all denominations of Christianity in the world right now need to see.
Quote:
Leviticus does say that one man laying down with another man is an “abomination,” but it also says, very near that passage, that eating shrimp is an “abomination,” that eating rabbit is an “abomination,” that planting two seeds in the same hole or wearing clothing with two types of material is an “abomination.”
According to the scholars, the Bible is referring to “ritual wrongs” (like eating pork) in the context of the period in which it was written, not things that are “innately immoral.”
To call homosexuality an “abomination,” they argue, is really just selective reading of the Bible, yet it is that buzz word — abomination, abomination, abomination — that has been repeated so many times by religious conservatives that it’s become, to many people, a permanently planted truism, while the abominable act of eating shrimp is simply a…uh…BBQism.
It’s the church, the movie argues, not the Bible and not God, who have created this discriminatory fervor against homosexuality; in fact, this aspect of Biblical literalism is fairly modern, originating in the 20th century.
|
In the Bible's original translation, the word "abomination" does not and DID NOT translate to how our modern day Christians use it. It does not mean an "act against God." The word in the original translation of the Bible actually means an "act against civilization's cultural norms."
Also take the word "unnatural" for example that the church also tends to use as a weapon of spiritual violence. Unnatural didn't translate to what the English dictionary says when the Bible was originally written. In it's original text, unnatural translated to "not customary or traditional."
IF you study the Bible as a scholar [not saying that I have], you will discover these facts about how the Bible is interpreted nowadays by modern Christianity is not comparable to what the Bible really says.
Homophobia is just another form of misogyny — it stems from a hatred of women.
The church doesn’t want men sleeping with other men because it emasculates them, which flies in the face of our patriarchal society, which I suppose threatens church leaders’ right to have a meal on the table when they get home.
So, instead, the church has created an environment of intolerance, which — in a decidedly non-Christian twist — has not only fostered violence against gays and lesbians, it legitimizes it — empowering cruelty and hostility.
The church used to preach that women had no right to speak and had to live in their place as a woman in the world. They also used to preach that interracial marriage was wrong, etc., etc., etc.......the list could go on and on. Unfortunately for the LGBT community, we're just the newest target.
Hope you took the time to read this and I hope it makes sense to those of you who choose to read it.
