It happened. Album sales in Japan are very frontloaded; they release all the singles first and then the album.
Distance ended up selling only 4.5 million total.
The album competed directly with Ayumi Hamasaki's greatest hits album, and the labels really fired up the rivalry in the press and media. Both albums were sold on every street corner in Japan. In the end Utada sold 3.0 million and Ayumi 2.9 million.
