I'm now curious to know what people think. I thought it was widely considered iconic but that may not be true...

I think it is notable in that it made Rihanna a star and finally justified her recording contract after two unsubstantial albums and rather underwhelming efforts. In a way I would say that it was the first song that actually made Rihanna viable within the music industry. It was very different from the one-offs Pon De Replay and S.O.S. (and their poorer performing successive singles) which could have been seen as simply lucky single releases. This song made her career. This was the first song that stuck with listeners.

It was the turning point to where Rihanna started to really establish herself. Without that song she really would not be where she is today. Fact. I don't know if it's necessarily iconic though. It lacks a cultural movement and cultural significance which may be because she isn't a strong performer or a strong video artist. You could argue that it upped her status as a musician and the resulting video/haircut made her a fashion icon. But at the same time it never really swept you in the same way other signature songs did. It was more of a Cry Me A River or an Irreplaceable compared to a SexyBack and a Crazy In Love. On paper it was huge. The song is very notable. But it doesn't have as much of a pop culture punch as an iconic song. Which could have been aided with a fire video.

It was a huge crossover smash along all formats and a solid musical effort but I think the overall impact was very much missed in some way.

Did someone just said that Shakira's Whenever Wherever video was more iconic than Umbrella

. I mean the song and video was cute but Umbrella IS iconic. The video was great, the song has many accolades, critical acclaim and is one of the biggest songs of the last decade. It was not just huge domestically but worldwide as well which in fact is the true definition of what determines if something is iconic or not. You guys are just posting a song you find better. Like how could Unfaithful, or Only Girl BE more iconic than Umbrella. I mean if you are going to hate at least provide a debatable point and opinion that can be taken seriously.
