To be honest, I think the main problem with both Christina and Avril is they waited far too long and in a brutal pop world, fans moved on. Avril also is getting slightly tired with her single formulations. While What The Hell has done okay, it is pretty much a sub-standard Girlfriend and it dosen't really fit the current lanscape of pop music. I'm not sure if it was the right single choice, considering it dosen't even closely reflect the album. I really don't think first week sales could have been much worse in the US.
My December was far less pop friendly than Goodbye Lullably, but kelly had a strong lead single and stood strong on her album. Sure it didn't come close to breakaway standards, but it still produced a platinum album and single with extremely limited label support.
I think RCA will give this album a max of three singles - but most likely 2 with videos and one without - or possibly even just two singles. Going by Christina and Kelly (Never Again & Sober, Not Myself Tonight & You Lost Me) it would seem likely that they will go (WTH & WYWH), although the ballads often flop, I think WYWH is at least more marketable than YLM and Sober.
However I can't see in cracking the top 40 on billboard. Really with the possible singles from this album, it's sort of doomed, especially with RCA.

Yup, I can see where you're coming from in regards to Kelly and Xtina both being on RCA, and if you look at it, Avril had done what both Xtina AND Kelly have done. Avril has made a non-commercial album (Kelly) after a 4 year break (Xtina). She wanted to be challenged if you ask me. She had three #1 albums with huge singles on each one. Let's see how she can use her talents and her past experiences to actually get herself out of this average start. Like she has already had a better start than Xtina, which gives her more of a time-line. And she has started off better worldwide. Forget about U.S., it has always been her weakest market. Her Asian, Australian and South American market is still really strong for her. Europe is weak and so is U.S.
She NEEDS a hit single off this album, and Wish You Were Here and Smile are hits waiting to happen. Also WTH has got her name out there again and it's close to selling 1 million downloads in U.S. alone now, which is great! So she now has a base and some support from RCA to launch her second single. There's potential. Kelly had potential too with My December but she didnt have the radio-friendly single at hand. I think Avril will be a different story.

Under My Skin had a single that reflected the album perfectly, and targeted the key audience of 16 million that bought Let Go, so it was natural that it sold so well.

Haha, I actually just got into Avril this album. I loved My December, and when I heard Avril's story with this project, I decided to get the album. I love Everybody Hurts, WYWH, Darling and Remember When - so much better than Bionic.
But I am serious when I say I don't know where RCA could go with it. They are way too slow to move in the industry. They seem to let things die before making a move.
I think I would go:
WTH, Smile, WYWH
I don't think Smile will perform that well, but releasing WYWH is risky - if pop radio dosen't pick it up it will end the whole era. RCA won't release another single, if both the single and album are flopping.
