The original DS came out in 2004/early-2005, the DS Lite came out in mid-2006, and was a MUCH needed redesign.
The DSi came out in 2008/2009 and the XL was only a larger size option of the same product, released in late 2009/early-2010. It wasn't really a new/improved version as it was larger and most people didn't feel a need to get it... It didn't offer anything new for the most part.
The 3DS is a new system, though they've kept the DS branding and it's backwards compatible with DS games, but I don't think they'll need to come out with a new one in the next year. They've worked out the kinks with the handheld market so it'll likely be a couple years before they introduce any major improvements to the hardware.
I figured it was gonna be $250, but oh well I don't mind I guess. But since my DS is broken, I have to wait for this to be able to play Pokemon Black though. 
I can't wait to play Animal Crossing on it though
